The lightweight Live distribution AntiX 23.2 has been released, built on Debian package base and aimed at installation on outdated hardware. This release is based on Debian 12 package base but comes without the system manager systemd and with eudev instead of udev. For initialization, either runit or sysvinit can be used. The default user environment is formed using the IceWM window manager, but […]
A week ago, a major update of the terminal multiplexer tmux version 3.5 was released, with the main change being an enhanced implementation of extended keys. On October 5, the developers presented a bugfix release 3.5a. Tmux is a free program that allows managing multiple console sessions from a single virtual terminal. It allows splitting the screen space of the terminal emulator vertically or horizontally into 'panes', in […]
After three months of hard work, version 0.15 of the ThorVG vector graphics library, written in C++ (C++14 standard) and distributed under the MIT license, has been released. The library is used for rendering vector graphics in projects like Tizen OS, Godot Engine, LVGL, and dotLottie players. Thor Vector Graphics (ThorVG) is a lightweight and portable open-source library, […]
Ardour — a powerful program for professional audio recording and processing, available for Linux, Windows, and macOS. It allows you to perform recording, mixing, editing, and mastering of audio. It also supports MIDI tracks, plugins, and certain video actions, such as extracting an audio track from a video file, a video timeline, and a monitor for synchronizing video and audio. Changes and innovations: the ability to name […]
The group responsible for the security of Akamai's content delivery network has identified an additional attack vector on the cups-browsed process, apart from its use as a link in an exploit leading to code execution on the system. By sending requests to the cups-browsed process, which accepts connections on port 631 without restrictions, it is possible to send data to another host, with sizes exceeding […]
The libgsf library, developed by the GNOME project, has been found to have a vulnerability (CVE-2024-42415) that could lead to code execution when processing a specially crafted file. The vulnerability is caused by an integer overflow that results in data being written beyond the allocated buffer while processing the sector distribution table during the parsing of parameters from files in CDF (Compound Document Format). The libgsf library provides functions for […]
Linus Torvalds has voiced new criticisms regarding the maintenance methods of Bcachefs in the main Linux kernel. The essence of the concerns is that Kent Overstreet, the author of Bcachefs, often sends many changes at the last minute before the release of the next pre-release version (‘-RC’), and this time his changes caused a build failure in 6.12-RC1 on big-endian systems […]
The release of the Hyprland 0.44 composite server, which uses the Wayland protocol, has been announced. The composite server is focused on a tiling window layout but also supports classic floating window placement, tabbed window grouping, a pseudo-tiling mode, and full-screen window expansion. It includes elements for creating visually appealing interfaces, such as gradients in window borders, blurring, animation effects, and shadows. For […]
Andrzej Janik has presented a plan for the further development of the ZLUDA project, which focuses on an open implementation of CUDA technology. While the first version of ZLUDA aimed at creating a CUDA implementation for Intel GPUs, and the second for AMD GPUs, the currently presented third version will concentrate on developing a universal CUDA implementation for any GPU other than NVIDIA GPUs. The project's goal is […]
The release of the Cage 0.2 composite server is available, utilizing Wayland and focused on the isolated launch of individual applications in kiosk mode. Use cases for Cage include creating home automation systems, demonstration stands, electronic signage, and self-service terminals. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the MIT license. The interface in Cage is limited to a single application, and the user cannot […]
A new version of Hyprland has been released, a modern stacking compositor for Wayland aimed at customizability and high performance. Written in C++, it is distributed under the BSD-3 license. Changes and innovations: a new argument —version has been added for checking the version of the Hyprland executable (instead of hyprctl version); the same applies to —systeminfo. New layout rule — order, intended for organizing […]
On October 6, a small update was released for Cage, a kiosk program for Wayland, whose sole purpose is to launch a single application in full screen. Changes and innovations: a version 0.18 of the wlroots library is now required for building; all improvements from wlroots 0.17 and 0.18 are included; support for primary selection has been added; support for the relative-pointer-unstable-v1 protocol has been added; Xwayland is no longer mandatory at runtime.
