The release of the specialized Tails 6.3 distribution (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), based on the Debian 12 package base and equipped with the GNOME 43 desktop, intended for anonymous browsing. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections, except for traffic over the Tor network, are blocked by the packet filter by default. For storing user data in […]
On May 15, version 1.6.0 of the high-performance automatic speech recognition system whisper.cpp was released, implementing the Whisper model from OpenAI in C and C++, and distributed under the MIT license. Change log: added the —flash-attn option to speed up data processing on devices with CUDA and Metal; higher performance on ppc64 architecture; fixed a regular expression processing error in the console utility example […]
A group of researchers from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) discovered an architectural vulnerability (CVE-2023-52424) in the IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi standard, allowing users to connect to a less secure wireless network instead of the trusted one they intended to connect to, which can then facilitate traffic interception and manipulation. This issue manifests in the wireless stacks of any operating systems and affects WPA3, WEP authentication methods, […]
Wedson Almeida Filho from Microsoft proposed for discussion in the Linux kernel developers' mailing list a second version of patches with a set of wrappers over the VFS subsystem, aimed at developing Rust-based file systems that operate in read-only mode. Along with the wrappers, two drivers implementing file systems based on them were published […]
Gradually, a few days ago, version 9.4 of the Rocky Linux project was released — a distribution organized by Gregory Kurtzer in response to the discontinuation of classic CentOS releases and the shift to CentOS Stream. Gregory Kurtzer, being a developer of CentOS, decided to start anew and launched the Rocky Linux project, which was intended to do everything that CentOS used to do, but now […]

Researchers from ESET have published a 43-page report analyzing the Ebury rootkit and its associated activity. It is claimed that Ebury has been in use since 2009 and has since been installed on over 400,000 Linux servers and several hundred systems based on FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Solaris. Approximately 110,000 servers remained compromised by Ebury […]
SiPearl has clarified the specifications of its Rhea1 server Arm processors, which will be used, in particular, in the first European exaflop supercomputer JUPITER, although the main chips in this system will still be the hybrid NVIDIA GH200 accelerators. Additionally, SiPearl has pushed back the Rhea1 release dates — initially, the first samples were planned to be presented in 2022, but now the company states […]
Corrective releases of the distributed version control system Git 2.45.1, 2.44.1, 2.43.4, 2.42.2, 2.41.1, 2.40.2, and 2.39.4 have been published, addressing five vulnerabilities. The most serious vulnerability (CVE-2024-32002), rated as critical, allows an attacker to achieve code execution when cloning a repository controlled by the attacker using the 'git clone' command. The vulnerability occurs only in file systems that are case-insensitive […]
The NetBSD Foundation has presented updated rules for making changes to the project's source code tree. The new guidelines include a clause prohibiting the inclusion of code generated using AI tools based on large language models, such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Code Llama, in NetBSD without prior written approval from the Core Team. The reasoning cited includes uncertainty in the area of […]
The developers of GNOME OS, an experimental distribution for GNOME developers and testers that allows them to evaluate the development status of the desktop environment, familiarize themselves with new emerging features, and test their applications in the development branches of GNOME, have announced the transition to using the systemd-sysupdate component for organizing atomic system updates. The goal of this change is to adapt the nightly builds of GNOME OS for […]
