It seems that the technology for restoring Windows 10 from physical media may soon become a thing of the past. At least, there is hope for that. In the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18970, the option to reinstall the OS over the network from the cloud has been introduced. This feature is called Reset this PC, and the description indicates that some users prefer to use high-speed Internet connections, […]
Two weeks after the discovery of the previous critical issue in Ghostscript, 4 more similar vulnerabilities have been identified (CVE-2019-14811, CVE-2019-14812, CVE-2019-14813, CVE-2019-14817) that allow bypassing the ‘-dSAFER’ isolation mode by creating a link to ‘.forceput’. When processing specially crafted documents, an attacker can access the file system contents and achieve arbitrary code execution on the system (for example, by adding commands to […]
The ISC consortium has released version 1.6.0 of the Kea DHCP server, which is set to replace the classic ISC DHCP. The project's source code is distributed under the Mozilla Public License (MPL) 2.0, instead of the ISC License previously used for ISC DHCP. The Kea DHCP server is based on BIND 10 technologies and built using a modular architecture that divides functionality into different handler processes. The product includes […]
An experimental release of the open-source Win32 API implementation — Wine 4.15 is available. Since the release of version 4.14, 28 bug reports have been closed and 244 changes have been made. The most significant changes include an initial implementation of the HTTP service (WinHTTP) and the associated API for client and server applications that send and receive requests using the HTTP protocol. Calls such as […]
Almost three years after the release of CUPS 2.2, CUPS 2.3 has emerged, which was delayed by more than a year. CUPS 2.3 is a significant update due to the licensing change. Apple decided to re-license the print server under the Apache 2.0 license. However, due to various Linux-specific utilities that are GPLv2 and unrelated to Apple, this creates a problem. […]
Last time, we talked about the exhaustion of IPv4 — about who owns a small share of the remaining addresses and why that is the case. Today, we discuss the alternative — the IPv6 protocol and the reasons for its slow adoption — some say the high cost of migration is to blame, while others claim the technology is already outdated. / CC BY-SA / Frerk Meyer Who is implementing […]
Introduction Over the years of my work in IT, particularly in IT sales, I have seen many pilot projects, but most of them ended in nothing despite significant time expenditures. Moreover, when it comes to testing hardware solutions, like storage systems, each demo system usually has a queue that can be almost a year long. Each […]
The topic of monorepositories has been discussed multiple times and usually sparks quite active debates. While creating werf as an Open Source tool aimed at improving the processes of building application code from Git into Docker images (and their subsequent delivery to Kubernetes), we have given little thought to which option is better. For us, it is essential to provide everything necessary for supporters of different opinions (if this […]
The first part is here. Imagine the situation. You are faced with the task of developing new functionality. You have work from your predecessors. Assuming you have no moral obligations, how would you proceed? Most often, all old work is forgotten, and everything starts from scratch. Nobody enjoys digging through someone else's code, especially when there are […]
OJSC 'Russian Railways' ('RZD') announces the testing of the first Russian electric train equipped with an autonomous control system. This concerns a specially modified version of the 'Lastochka' (Swallow). The train is equipped with technology for positioning, communication with the dispatch center, and obstacle detection on the track. The 'Lastochka' can operate on schedule in unmanned mode, and upon detecting an obstacle, it automatically brakes. The test journey […]
At the recently held Open Source Technology Summit (OSTS), Josh Triplett, a leading engineer at Intel, spoke about his company's interest in ensuring that Rust reaches 'parity' with the still-dominant C language in the fields of systems and low-level development. In his presentation titled […]
In the corrective releases of the POP3/IMAP4 server Dovecot 2.3.7.2 and 2.2.36.4, as well as in the add-on Pigeonhole 0.5.7.2 and 0.4.24.2, a critical vulnerability (CVE-2019-11500) was addressed that allows for data to be written outside the allocated buffer by sending specially crafted requests via the IMAP or ManageSieve protocols. This issue can be exploited even before authentication is completed. A working exploit has yet to be prepared, but […]
