Part 1. About CPU Part 2. About Memory Today, we will discuss the metrics of the disk subsystem in vSphere. Storage issues are the most common cause of slow virtual machine performance. While troubleshooting CPU and RAM issues usually ends at the hypervisor level, if there are disk problems, one may need to investigate the data transfer network and the storage system. I will cover this topic […]
The goal of this post: to showcase debugging techniques in Debian/Ubuntu related to "finding the source" in the system configuration file. Test example: after long struggles with a tar.gz copy of the installed OS and after restoring it and installing updates, we receive the message: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-54-generic W: initramfs-tools configuration sets RESUME=/dev/mapper/U1563304817I0-swap W: but no matching swap device is available. I: The initramfs […]
Translator's note: Dailymotion is one of the largest video hosting services in the world and a notable user of Kubernetes. In this material, system architect David Donchez shares the results of creating the company's production platform based on K8s, which started with a cloud installation in GKE and ended up as a hybrid solution, allowing for better response times and savings on infrastructure costs. Six vulnerabilities have been addressed in FreeBSD that allow for privilege escalation in the system or access to kernel data. The issues have been fixed in updates 12.0-RELEASE-p8, 11.2-RELEASE-p12, and 11.3-RELEASE-p1. CVE-2019-5606 is a flaw in the close call handler for file descriptors created through the posix_openpt system call, which may lead to writing to already freed areas of kernel memory (write-after-free). A local attacker may […]
When clicking on links posted on VK, it can be noticed that, like in other social networks, the user is first redirected to a 'safe' link, after which the social network decides whether to allow the user to proceed or not. Most attentive users have noticed a half-second appearance of 'vk.com/away.php' in the browser's address bar, but of course, they did not attach any significance to it. Background Once, a certain programmer finalized […]
I want to share my experience with the evolution of database systems usage in the GLASHA online language school. The school was founded in 2012, and at the beginning of its operations, it had only 12 students, so there were no problems with scheduling and payments. However, as it grew, developed, and new students appeared, the question of choosing a database system became pressing […]
The Fedora project developers announced the start of testing the first preliminary version of the new edition of the Fedora CoreOS distribution, which replaces the Fedora Atomic Host and CoreOS Container Linux products as a single solution for running environments based on isolated containers. From CoreOS Container Linux, which came under Red Hat's control following the acquisition of CoreOS, Fedora CoreOS […]
AMD has released a new open framework, Caudron, providing tools for rapid development of game prototypes and graphical applications using the Vulkan or DirectX12 APIs. The framework was initially used internally to develop demonstrations and examples for the SDK. The project's code is written in C++11 and is distributed under the MIT license. Caudron is presented as a simplified game engine, easy to learn and […]
A critical vulnerability (CVE-2019-12815) has been discovered in ProFTPd (a popular FTP server). Exploitation allows files to be copied within the server without authentication using the 'site cpfr' and 'site cpto' commands, even on servers with anonymous access. The vulnerability is caused by improper checking of read and write access limits (Limit READ and Limit WRITE) in the mod_copy module, which is used […]
The developers of Exim reported the discovery of a vulnerability and the upcoming release of an update that will fix it. They noted that the risk of exploitation is quite low, as it requires a very specific configuration to be carried out. Details are not yet disclosed, except that exploitation is possible both locally and remotely. The update will be released on July 25, 2019, at which time […]
Epigraph: Once upon a time, Hedgehog and Little Bear met in the forest. — Hello, Hedgehog! — Hello, Little Bear! So, word for word, joke for joke, Hedgehog received a slap on the face from Little Bear … Below are the reflections of our team leader and the product development director at RAS, Igor Marnat, on the specifics of workplace conflicts and possible management methods for them. The expansion of large cities and the formation of agglomerations is one of the significant trends in social development today. Moscow alone is expected to expand by 4 million square meters of housing in 2019 (not including the 15 municipalities that will join by 2020). Across this vast territory, telecommunications operators will need to provide internet access to users. This may involve […]
