After nine months of development, the release of the Cinnamon 4.2 user environment has been finalized, within which the Linux Mint distribution's development community is advancing a fork of the GNOME Shell, Nautilus file manager, and Mutter window manager, aimed at providing a GNOME 2 style environment with support for successful interaction elements from GNOME Shell. Cinnamon is based on GNOME components, but these components [...]
According to online sources, Microsoft's virtual assistant Cortana will be completely detached from Windows 10 and transformed into a standalone application. Currently, a beta version of Cortana has appeared in the Windows Store app store, from where anyone can download it. This indicates that Microsoft will update the voice assistant separately from the software platform in the future. This approach will help [...]
Developers at Mozilla have released the first public build of the updated Firefox Preview browser, which was previously known as Fenix. The new version is set to be released this fall, and a 'pilot' version of the application can currently be downloaded. This new browser is positioned as a kind of replacement and development of Firefox Focus. It is based on the same GeckoView engine but differs in other aspects. The new version is almost twice as fast, […]
The Waypipe project has been introduced, which develops a proxy for the Wayland protocol, allowing applications to run on a different host. Waypipe facilitates the transmission to another host through a single network socket for Wayland messages and serialized changes in shared memory buffers and DMABUF. SSH can be used as a transport similar to the built-in SSH redirection for the X11 protocol (`ssh -X`). […]
After almost six months of active development and the release of the first versioned edition, the first major version of Pleroma — a federated social network for microblogging, written in Elixir and using the standardized W3C ActivityPub protocol — has been presented. It is the second largest network in the Fediverse. Unlike its closest competitor, Mastodon, which is written in Ruby and depends on […]
After three years of development, the first stable release of Pleroma version 0.9.9 has been presented — a federated social network for microblogging, written in Elixir and utilizing the standardized W3C ActivityPub protocol. It is the second largest network in the Fediverse. In contrast to its closest competitor, Mastodon, which is written in Ruby and relies on a large number of resource-intensive components, Pleroma is a high-performance […]
The head of Red Hat's Desktop division, Christian Schaller, revealed in his blog the team's plans for developing Wayland and completely discontinuing development of the X Window System (X, X11): Christian Schaller: "As soon as we finish with this (the complete dismissal of the need for XWayland, author’s note), we plan to move X.org to a 'sustained support' mode quite quickly. The reality […]
Every year, rescuers search for tens of thousands of people missing in wild conditions. From the cities, our technological power seems so enormous that it can handle any task. Just take a dozen drones, equip each with a camera and thermal imager, attach a neural network, and voilà — it will find anyone in 15 minutes. But that is not the case at all. So far […]
And around me is the tundra, around me is ice. I watch as everyone is in a hurry, but no one is going anywhere. B.G. A Room with a White Ceiling. I woke up in a small room with a white ceiling. I was alone in the room. I was lying on a bed that resembled a hospital bed. My hands were tied to a metal frame. There was no one in the room […]
Introduction It's time to buy a storage system. Which one to choose and whom to listen to? Vendor A talks about vendor B, while integrator C offers opposing advice and recommends vendor D. In such situations, even an experienced storage architect can feel overwhelmed, especially with all the new vendors and the trendy SDS and hyper-convergence. So, how do you […]
Introduction An information system, from the user's perspective, is well defined in GOST RV 51987 as "an automated system, the result of which is the presentation of output information for subsequent use." If we consider the internal structure, any IS essentially consists of a system of interconnected algorithms implemented in code. Broadly speaking, according to the Turing-Church thesis, an algorithm (and hence the IS) performs a transformation of a set of input […]
