Mastodon is a "decentralized Twitter." Microblogs scattered across numerous independent servers, interconnected into a single network. The closest analogy is regular email. You can register on any server and subscribe to posts from users on any other servers. Updates (from v2.9.0) New Features Added API for moderation. Added audio upload. Added short_description and approval_required to the GET method […]
DDoS attacks remain one of the most discussed topics in the field of information security. However, not everyone realizes that bot traffic, which is the tool for such attacks, poses numerous other dangers for online businesses. Malicious actors can use bots not only to take a website down but also to steal data, distort business metrics, increase advertising costs, and damage reputation […]
When setting up and configuring a Git server, the question arises about organizing access for multiple users to several projects. I conducted research on this issue and found a solution that meets all my requirements: simple, secure, and reliable. My requirements are as follows: each user connects with their own account, multiple users can work on one project, and the same user can work on several […]
Note: In the Kubernetes community, a trend known as GitOps is gaining explicit popularity, as we personally confirmed by attending KubeCon Europe 2019. This term was relatively recently coined by Weaveworks CEO Alexis Richardson and refers to the use of familiar tools for developers (primarily Git, hence the name) to address operational tasks. In […]
The ninth generation of HPE ProLiant DL180 and DL160 servers did not earn public affection. This is because the benefits of purchasing them—compared to the older DL300 series—were not so obvious. However, the company acknowledged past mistakes, and with the tenth generation Gen10, which was slightly delayed in its market release, everything was set right again. Now […]
Just five years ago, Intel was proud to offer a unified and traditional industry programming model based on x86-compatible instructions. This model encompassed mobile systems on Atom SoCs, Xeon Phi compute accelerators (conditionally graphical architecture — formerly Larrabee), and processors. Today, the assertion that «x86 is everything to us» has become […]
Microsoft has released the mimalloc library under the MIT license, which implements a memory allocation system originally created for the runtime components of the Koka and Lean languages. Mimalloc is adapted for use in standard applications without modifying their code and can serve as a transparent replacement for the malloc function. It supports operation in Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD, and other Unix-like systems. A key feature of mimalloc […]
The Open Invention Network (OIN) organization, which protects the Linux ecosystem from patent claims, has announced that it has surpassed 3000 participants. Over the past two years, the number of OIN participants has increased by 50%. For example, just since the beginning of this year, 350 new companies, communities, and organizations have joined OIN, signing a licensing agreement for patent sharing. OIN participants commit not to […]
We discuss what new developments may arise in data centers and beyond. / photo jesse orrico Unsplash It is believed that silicon transistors are nearing their technological limits. Last time, we talked about materials that could replace silicon and discussed alternative approaches to transistor development. Today, we’re talking about concepts that can transform the principles of traditional computing systems: […]
Many IT systems have a mandatory rule for periodically changing passwords. This is perhaps the most hated and most useless requirement of security systems. Some users, as a life hack, simply change the digit at the end. This practice has caused numerous inconveniences. However, people had to endure it for the sake of security. Now this advice is completely outdated. In May 2019, even Microsoft […]
Meetups for system administrators, Sysadminka, are held in Chelyabinsk, and at the last one, I presented our solution for running applications on 1C-Bitrix in Kubernetes. Bitrix, Kubernetes, and Ceph—an excellent mix? I’ll talk about how we put together a working solution from all of this. Let’s go! The meetup took place on April 18 in Chelyabinsk. You can read about our meetups on Timepad and view […]
The signal that helps airplanes find the runway can be faked using a radio for $600. The aircraft in the demonstration attacks the radio because of fake KGS signals, landing to the right of the runway. Almost any aircraft that has taken to the skies in the last 50 years—whether it’s a single-engine Cessna or a giant airliner with 600 seats—has relied on radio stations […]
