"Jetpack Pilot" is a "job of the past," it's 60 years old. "Jetpack Developer" - 100 years old. "Instructor of the school course on jetpack construction" is a job of the present, we're doing that now. But what is the profession of the future? Tamper? Archeoprogrammer? Designer of false memories? Blade Runner? A long-time acquaintance of mine who participated in the crowdsourcing for a jetpack engine has now launched his […]
Reversing and hacking external self-encrypting drives has been my long-standing hobby. In the past, I’ve had the opportunity to work with models like Zalman VE-400, Zalman ZM-SHE500, and Zalman ZM-VE500. Recently, a colleague brought me another exhibit: Patriot (Aigo) SK8671, which is built according to a typical design – an LCD indicator and a keyboard for PIN code entry. Here’s what came of it… 1. Introduction […]
Choosing CEPH. Part 1 We had five racks, ten optical switches, configured BGP, a couple of dozen SSDs, and a bunch of SAS drives of all colors and sizes, plus proxmox and a desire to shove all the static into our own S3 storage. It's not that all this was needed for virtualization, but since I started using open source – let’s go into […]
Sometimes, not only the documentation itself but also the process of working on it can be critical. For example, in projects, a lion's share of the work is related to preparing documentation, and an incorrect process can lead to errors and even loss of information, and therefore, loss of time and profit. But even if this topic isn't central […]
Cloudflare has launched the League of Entropy service, which is supported by a consortium of several organizations interested in providing high-quality random numbers. Unlike existing centralized systems, the League of Entropy does not rely on a single source and uses entropy generated from multiple unrelated generators managed by different project participants to generate random sequences. […]
On June 17, 2019, a significant release of the DragonFly BSD operating system was presented – Release 56. This release brings substantial improvements to the Virtual Memory System, updates for Radeon and TTM, as well as performance enhancements for HAMMER2. DragonFly was formed in 2003 as a fork of FreeBSD version 4. Among its many features, the following stand out: A high-performance file system HAMMER2 […]
Research work is perhaps the most interesting part of our studies. The idea is to try out your chosen direction while still at university. For instance, students from Software Engineering and Machine Learning often pursue research projects in companies (mostly JetBrains or Yandex, but not only). In this post, I will talk about my project in the field of Computer Science. […]
The head station collects signals from multiple sources, processes them, and broadcasts them into the cable network. Content of the series of articles Part 1: General architecture of the cable TV network Part 2: Composition and form of the signal Part 3: Analog component of the signal Part 4: Digital component of the signal Part 5: Coaxial distribution network Part 6: RF signal amplifiers Part 7: Optical receivers Part 8: Optical […]
How to read this article: I apologize for the lengthy and chaotic text. To save your time, I start each chapter with an introduction titled 'What I learned,' where I summarize the essence of the chapter in one or two sentences. 'Just show me the solution!' If you just want to see what I arrived at, skip to the chapter 'Becoming More Inventive,' but […]
Previously, we discussed how easily and simply the Zimbra Collaboration Suite Open-Source Edition can scale. New mail stores can be added without halting the operation of the infrastructure on which Zimbra is deployed. This capability is highly valued by SaaS providers who offer their clients access to the Zimbra Collaboration Suite on a commercial basis. However, this scaling process is not without […]
Netflix has identified several critical vulnerabilities in the TCP stacks of Linux and FreeBSD that allow for remote initiation of kernel crashes or excessive resource consumption when processing specially crafted TCP packets (packet-of-death). The issues are caused by errors in the handlers for maximum segment size (MSS) in TCP packets and the selective acknowledgment (SACK) mechanism. CVE-2019-11477 (SACK Panic) […]
The release of DragonFlyBSD 5.6 is now available, an operating system with a hybrid kernel, created in 2003 for the alternative development of the FreeBSD 4.x branch. Key features of DragonFly BSD include the HAMMER distributed versioned filesystem, support for loading 'virtual' kernels as user processes, caching data and metadata from the filesystem on SSDs, context-aware variant symbolic links, and the ability to freeze processes […]
