September 29 and 30 - open track of the DevOps Live 2020 conference

DevOps Live 2020 (September 29-30 and October 6-7) will be held online in an updated format. The pandemic has accelerated the time for change and has made it clear that entrepreneurs who are able to quickly redesign their product to work online are outperforming β€œtraditional” businessmen. Therefore, on September 29-30 and October 6-7, we will look at DevOps from three sides: from the side of business, infrastructure and service.

Let's also talk about how to involve the whole company in the DevOps transformation, and how each team member (including system administrators, developers, testers, security officers and team leaders) affects the state of the business and its performance. When traffic goes to a stable working application, the business grows and earns. And there is time, resources, confident and focused developers to create new features, experiment and master new technologies. There will be only a few traditional reports at the conference. We will pay more attention to practice in different formats: workshops, meetups and round tables. Schedule. Order tickets.

The overall goal of our DevOps Live meeting will be to answer two business rescue questions:

  1. How to use DevOps in software delivery to increase the productivity and effectiveness of the entire company?

  2. How can business and product owners benefit by redesigning the DevOps manufacturing process?

September 29 and 30 - open track of the DevOps Live 2020 conference

On September 29 and 30, anyone can take part in the open track. For this it is necessary sign up.

Two open days became possible thanks to the general partner of the conference β€” β€œSportmaster LabΒ».

Sportmaster Lab is a large IT division of Sportmaster. More than 1000 specialists maintain the performance of corporate websites, finalize applications, supplement them with new and new features, and at the same time openly talk about their work.

But for a full immersion in the DevOps topic, we recommend purchasing full access. Full access is 4 days of the conference, participation in all workshops and discussions, homework between the second and third days of the conference, the opportunity to organize your own meetup to talk about a sore point or solve a work problem.

Open track speakers DevOps Live they will tell you where DevOps is heading and what the future holds for it. We will learn what and how to learn to become a β€œstrong practitioner” of the DevOps approach. We will definitely talk about IT security, and we will hone our practical skills at workshops.

DevOps - how the movement began and what to do with it now

When you start any new movement, you roughly imagine what the end result should be. But as soon as like-minded people join you, they can at least slightly, but shift the angle, goal or idea of it. Of course, the more people involved in the new movement, the stronger it is. But there is always a danger that at any moment the movement can make an unexpected and sharp turn, and now - the goal has been achieved, but is this how you imagined everything?

Kris Buytaert, as one of the initiators of the DevOps movement, will share his 10-year observations in the report "10 years of #devops, but what did we really learn?”, how DevOps has been developing in the world all these years. Chris will talk about where this movement came from after 10 years of persistent changes in the culture of programming, teaching infrastructure as code, teaching monitoring and metrics. Perhaps we will feel sad more than once, listening to Chris.

Both the community and the concept of DevOps have certainly evolved, but in the right direction? DevOps was originally conceived to bridge the gap between developers and operations. So that together they can successfully develop projects - scale, automate and manage large infrastructure. But over the years, the word DevOps, according to Chris, has lost its original meaning. Chris speaks and writes extensively on this topic and believes that in the next 10 years it is necessary to return DevOps to its original meaning. If, of course, this is still possible ...

Engineering vision and business needs. How to speak the same language?

Together with Evgeny Potapov (ITSumma) let's take a little trip back in time and maybe even think about floppy disks for software delivery. And then let's go back and try to understand why businesses now prefer to use DevOps as a method of creating software products. Together with Evgeny, we will discuss why business is abandoning the recently fashionable Agile, and how it is possible to mix Agile and DevOps. The purpose of this excursion is to explain to engineers what is the difference between the needs of the business and what they see as important. In the report "Why businesses want DevOps and what an engineer needs to know to speak the same languageΒ» Eugene will touch upon all these issues.

How we studied the state of DevOps in Russia

For 10 years, the global DevOps movement has been followed by companies such as DORA, Puppet, DevOps Institute, who conducted surveys and studies in which direction everyone is turning. Unfortunately, these reports do not provide information on how DevOps is changing in Russia. In order to see and calculate the Russian evolution of DevOps, Ontico, together with Express 42, surveyed not about 1000 specialists who identify themselves as DevOps in August this year. Now we have a clearer picture of DevOps development in Russia.

Organizers and active participants of the study Igor Kurochkin and Vitaly Khabarov from the Express 42 company in the report "State of DevOps in RussiaΒ» they will talk about the results of the study, and compare them with the data obtained earlier and show which hypotheses were confirmed and how we can now live with it. Igor and Vitaly DevOps-approach, working in Express 42, have been helping companies implement the best DevOps practices for several years. Among the client projects in which the guys took part are Avito, Uchi.ru, Tinkoff Bank, Rosbank, Raiffeisenbank, Wild Apricot, Pushwoosh, SkyEng, Delimobil, Lamoda. We will all be interested to learn about the results of the study from practitioners of the DevOps approach.

Is it possible to negotiate with security people in DevOps?

A high-class DevOps specialist, as you know, can negotiate even with a turtle, understanding and taking into account its interests. Integration with security is no less difficult, since information security is a balance (we wrote about it) between all processes. Squeeze it, and IB will turn into a pumpkin, a brake and an irritant. If you don't do it, the business may fail. Lev Paley in the report "IS as a brake or a driver - choose for yourself!will discuss these highly sensitive issues, both in terms of information security and functional.

Leo has a diploma from Moscow State Technical University. Bauman about retraining in the direction of "Information security of automated systems" and more than 10 years of experience in IT and information security. He is mainly engaged in projects for the implementation of complex centralized information security systems. As an expert, Leo will share with you the basic knowledge and tools related to cybersecurity. After the presentation, you will understand how cybersecurity should develop in your company.

Do you want my experience? I have it!

We hold our conferences to exchange experiences within the entire IT community. We want practical successful cases to help you in your work so that you do not waste time (and company money) on the next bikes. But if the exchange of knowledge stops after the conference, it is of little use. You are doing double work if you do not share experience within the company: documents, code, even business processes are duplicated. Of course, you may not have enough time to talk about your discoveries or even the experience and practice of writing articles. On the other hand, even when you start sharing, you may encounter a lack of support and even discover some technical limitations - how, where, with what help to spread useful knowledge?

Igor Tsupko, director of the unknown in Flant, in the report "Activation of knowledge sharingΒ» will tell you how to promote knowledge management in devops. He would very much like experts to stop being silent and start sharing knowledge, but at the same time not constantly answering the same questions. Igor knows the secret that will help you start knowledge sharing in the company and show what the problem of knowledge sharing consists of. You will receive tools on how to organize it, on what to deploy it, and how to maintain it. Igor will also hold a workshop where participants will formulate a personal plan for activating knowledge for his team or company. Let's create magic!

Wings, legs, most importantly ... the brain!

It is not enough to start the process of knowledge exchange, it must also be supported until it enters our lives deeply and for a long time. Our brain is very plastic, and depends on what we do every day, what we choose and where we move. The brain will build a neural network based primarily on our actions, not thoughts. But even here there is a condition - if you do it through force, forcing yourself and beating your willpower with a stick, then this is a direct path to burnout on an emotional and biochemical level. The process of creating a habit and introducing a new one is important in itself. AND Max Kotkov, who has 19 years of experience in managing himself, his states and communications, argues that the brain, although plastic, is better to develop it with the help of activities that bring pleasure, and not with the help of coffee and other stimulants.

in the report Β«Brain plasticity: towards productivity or burnout?Β» Max will raise two important issues - low productivity and burnout. No amount of time management will help us if we do not understand how the brain works. It happens to everyone: β€œI don’t have the strength or desire, I work, I come home and lie down, or I do what I need, because I need to, but I don’t want to communicate with anyone, and I don’t even want to play.” And here it is important to understand what the productivity of the brain is based on. Max will explain how to select the states you need to complete a task, how to quickly enable them, and quickly switch between different types of tasks. Talk about switching to rest to restore resources. Together with Max, we will consolidate new knowledge at the workshop.

How to grow?

So, any new processes, projects, undertakings, as well as all changes in the old are not easy. The neurons of the brain are connected to each other, and these connections give us habitual reactions, actions and habits. It takes time to change something or introduce something new into our (or someone else's) consciousness - it's not for nothing that everyone talks about 30 or 40 days for new habits. That is exactly how long - at least 30 days - nerve cells need to create new connections - that is, to actually grow new processes so that they communicate with each other. And now you have a new habit. If we stop the process of creating a habit, the neuron disappears, as the brain only retains the connections that we use. Therefore, the process that has not been completed to the end will disappear, as if it had not begun.

In our post-quarantine time, hundreds and thousands of courses, books, schools and other platforms, including those for professional development, are helping us more and more in this. But why is this all? Who needs it? What is the use of this? Karen Tovmasyan from EPAM in the report "Why you need to constantly grow, how to do it without harming your health, and where does shame come from” will answer questions about how to turn on motivation and find a goal, what training and generally new knowledge will give you in life and, in particular, in work, and, of course, how, without hurrying anywhere, to reach the goal faster than a hare.

After these presentations by Max and Karen, you will be able to enter any state you need to learn something new, implement it at work, and share experience with colleagues and like-minded people. And then at work the mountains will move (or even go to you), and after work - to relax in pleasure without heavy thoughts about work. Shall we practice?

DevOps in practice: from elephants to a small data center

The developers, if they take up the task, they will do it. And if DevOps connects, and even in the right state, then anything you want is possible. Do you want to quickly deploy a small data center? Easily! Andrey Kvapil (WEDOS Internet, as), a fan of OpenSource, in the report "Kubernetes-in-Kubernetes and a PXE-booted server farmΒ», will talk about two free projects: Kubernetes-in-Kubernetes and Kubefarm, which can be used to quickly deploy Kubernetes clusters on your own equipment. Andrew will show you the simplest way to deploy and keep hundreds of on-premise servers up to date. But this is not the limit of your possibilities. You'll learn how to easily spawn and delete physical nodes like VMs, split (and dominate) clusters, deploy Kubernetes Helm, and hear about the cluster API. Not a bad pick for a DevOps dictator?

Sergey Kolesnikov  of X5 Retail Group will go even further and is ready not only to explain why  DevOps in a retailer, but also to show how digital transformation is taking place at X5. In the report "Teaching an Elephant to Dance: Implementing DevOps in Huge RetailΒ» Sergey will share his experience on how DevOps practices were implemented at the company level in X5. Sergey is responsible for the implementation of DevOps in X5 and knows how to choose the right team, create a platform for the infrastructure, and what DevOps engineers will do (and why) then. Hint: when two people with different interests meet, a negotiator is needed, and when there are more than two, a super negotiator is needed.

And if small companies want to reach an agreement within the project team quickly, painlessly and in the interests of business, large companies want this even more. There are many more people, projects, and clashes of interests, which is why Sportmaster Lab has not avoided getting to know DevOps. Sergey Minaev in the report β€œFrom the bloody enterprise to teamwork. The Tale of How We Spread DevOps” tells how DevOps approaches helped another giant in teamwork. Sportmaster Lab has created common communication channels for this and established the exchange of knowledge and experience. Different departments have learned to jointly write test cases and conduct tests. Sergey will show how automation saved the team time for development and operation, and also got rid of the exhausting routine. Of course, Sportmaster Lab did not use DevOps for all projects, but already now there is a profit in this for Development, and for QA, and for Operations.

Thanks to the online format, the reports at DevOps Live 2020 will not be "classic" - each participant will be able to write their own question in the chat instead of keeping it in memory. Moderators will help collect questions, and the speaker will stop for answers during the narration. In addition, the moderator will include participants in the broadcast during the discussion of cases. At the same time, there will also be traditional questions and answers at the end.

If you want to discuss, ask for advice or share stories from work, subscribe to the DevOpsConfTalks Telegram channel. And we will write about the event-chips of the conference in telegram, facebook, twitterand in contact with. And, of course, on Youtube.

See you at DevOps Live!
