Decentralized Internet Service Provider "Medium" - three months later

Decentralized Internet Service Provider "Medium" - three months laterOn May 1, 2019, the current President of the Russian Federation signed Federal Law No. 90-FZ “On Amendments to the Federal Law “On Communications” and the Federal Law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection”, also known as draft law "On sovereign Runet".

Based on the provision that the above law should come into force on November 1, 2019, a group of Russian enthusiasts in April of this year decided to create Russia's first decentralized Internet provider, also known as "Medium".

"Medium" provides users with access to network resources free of charge I2P, due to the use of which it becomes impossible to calculate not only the router where the traffic came from (see. basic principles of "garlic" traffic routing), but also the end user — the Medium subscriber.

At the time of publication of the article, Medium already has several access points in Kolomna, lakes, Tyumen, Samara, Khanty-Mansiysk и Riga.

More details about the history of the formation of the Medium network can be found under the cut.

Internet privacy is not a myth

“There was no classical or medieval Latin word equivalent to 'privacy'; "privatio" meant "to take away" - Georges Duby, author of The History of Private Life: Revelations of the Medieval World.

We should not forget that the only sure way to ensure your own privacy when using the Internet is set up your working environment due way and respect basic rules of information hygiene.

"The salvation of a drowning man is the work of the drowning man himself." No matter how much the "corporations of good" regale their user with promises of confidentiality regarding the use of his personal data, only decentralized networks and open source solutions that assume the possibility of independent information security auditing can be truly trusted.

Having a centralized system also implies having a single point of failure, which, at the first opportunity, will become a source of data leakage. Any centralized system is compromised by default, no matter how well developed the information security infrastructure is. In reality, the only two generous gifts of nature that can be trusted are humanity: mathematics and logic.

“Are they watching? And what do I care? After all, I am a law-abiding citizen…”

Try asking yourself the following question - do government agencies today have sufficient competence in the field of information security to guarantee the privacy and confidentiality of the end user in relation to his personal data, which they already collect? Are they responsible for this??

It seems, not quite. Our personal data is worth nothing.

The “law-abiding citizen” approach is more or less acceptable in a society where the state apparatus is indeed used by citizens as the main tool for protecting their rights and freedoms.

Now we are faced with an extremely important task - to clearly define and defend our position regarding the free Internet.

"The ice is broken, gentlemen of the jury!"

Members of the "Medium" community take an active part in the life of the network.

That's what we are have already done:

  1. In three months, we raised a total of 11 points of the Medium network in Russia and one - in Latvia
  2. We have restarted the web service medium.i2p - now it has a .b32 address starting with "Medium" - mediumsqsqgxwwhioefin4qu2wql4nybk5fff7tgwbg2f6bgkboa.b32.i2p
  3. We launched a web service connectivitycheck.medium.i2p for "Medium" network operators, which, if there is an active connection to the I2P network, returns a response code Http204. This functionality can be used by operators to check and maintain the health of their access points.
  4. Мы held gathering of system operators of points of network "Medium" in Moscow
  5. Мы updated project logo
  6. Мы published English version previous article about "Medium" on Habré

And here is what we to be done:

  1. Increase the total number of access points in Russia
  2. Discuss long-term plans for the development of the Medium network
  3. Discuss the most common legal issues that may affect the operation of the Medium network
  4. Discuss how Medium points provide access to the Yggdrasil network
  5. Discuss issues related to information security within the Medium network
  6. Develop a fork of OpenWRT with i2pd on board to quickly deploy points of the "Medium" network
