F5 buys NGINX

F5 acquires NGINX to bring NetOps and DevOps together and deliver consistent application services to customers across all environments. The deal is valued at approximately $670 million.

The development team, including Igor Sysoev and Maxim Konovalov, will continue to develop NGINX as part of F5.

F5 expects to implement its security expertise in the Nginx server, as well as use it in its cloud products. According to Francois Loco-Donu, CEO of F5, the merger will allow the company's clients to significantly accelerate the development of containerized applications, and Nginx, in turn, will receive even greater opportunities in large businesses.

Representatives of both companies separately noted that one of the main conditions without which the transaction would not have taken place was the preservation of the openness of Nginx.

With today's news, our vision and mission remain unchanged. We continue to help clients build distributed application architectures. We are still building a platform that optimizes inbound/outbound traffic and APIs. And we are still helping companies in their transition to microservices. What is changing is our trajectory. F5 shares our mission, vision and values. But they bring a huge amount of additional resources and additional technologies.

Make no mistake: F5 is committed to supporting the NGINX brand and open source technologies. Without this commitment, the deal would not have taken place with either party.

Looking ahead, I am excited about the opportunity to bring together two respective market leaders. We have additional strengths. F5 is a leader in application infrastructure for networks and security teams. NGINX is a leader in application infrastructure for developers and DevOps teams built on our open source core. Our web and application server, microservices, and API management solutions complement F5's application management, application security, and infrastructure solutions. Even in the case of application delivery controllers (ADCs), where there is some overlap, NGINX has created a lightweight, software-only version that complements F5's cloud, virtual, and physical device options.

Gus Robertson, NGINX

The F5 acquisition of NGINX strengthens our growth trajectory by accelerating our software and transforming multiple clouds. By bringing together world-class F5 applications for application security and rich application services for performance, availability and management, together with NGINX's leading application delivery and API management solutions, an unrivaled reputation and brand awareness in the DevOps community, and a large open source user base. code, we bridge the gap between NetOps and DevOps with consistent application services in a multi-tenant enterprise environment.
