Hyperscale data centers: who builds them and how much they cost

By the end of 2018, the number of hyperscale data centers reached 430 pieces. Analysts predict that this year their number will increase to 500. Already, work is underway to build another 132 hyperscale data centers. In total, they will process 68% of the data generated by humanity. The capacities of these data centers are needed by IT companies and cloud providers.

Who builds the hyperscale

Majority (40%) of hyperscale data centers is in USA. At the beginning of the summer it became known about the plans turn two power plants in New York State - in the city Somerset and village Cayuga - in hyperscale data centers with a capacity of 250 and 100 MW, respectively. Also build a new data center in the country plans to Google. He will be raised to Phoenix, where other data centers are being built, with a total capacity of more than a gigawatt.

Hyperscale data centers are also being developed in Europe. Over the past year, cloud providers increased capacity of data centers in Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and Paris by 100 MW. According to investors from CBRE, this figure will increase by another 223 MW by the end of 2019.

In Norway, one of the most famous data centers is Green Mountain. He located in an underground bunker and cooled by water from a nearby fjord. Soon this data center will receive new equipment that will increase its capacity by 35 MW.

How much is it

On the “upgrade” of European data centers, which we talked about above, providers spent $ 800 million (equipment that increases the power of the data center by one megawatt, bypasses 6,5-17 million dollars). To upgrade power plants in the state of New York (according to preliminary estimates), they plan to raise $100 million.

Building hyperscale data centers from scratch is even more expensive. In 2017, Google representatives toldthat over the past three years the company has spent $30 billion to expand its data center network. Since then, this number has only increased.

Recently it became known that the IT giant plans to invest another 1,1 billion dollars in the development of the Dutch data centers. As for other organizations, Microsoft and Amazon spend $10 billion a year to develop data center infrastructure.

In addition to the costs of expanding and building new data centers, companies spend money on their maintenance. By 2025, data centers are expected to will consume one fifth of the electricity produced on the planet.

On estimated experts from the US Natural Resources Defense Council, US data center operators annually spend about $13 billion on electricity.

Nearly half of the energy consumed accounts on air conditioning systems. Therefore, today new technologies are being developed that would optimize the cooling processes in the data center. Examples include immersion cooling and smart algorithms for controlling airflows. We talked about them in more detail in one of the previous articles.

Alternative Trend - Edge Computing

Hyperscale data centers require significant investments in infrastructure. That's why not everyone companies have the opportunity to build them. Also in the IT industry there is an opinionthat large-scale data centers are not “flexible” enough to solve problems in the financial and educational fields, where it is necessary to process data on the periphery.

That is why in the IT industry, in parallel with hyperscale data centers, another trend is developing - edge computing. Data centers for edge computing are often modular systems. They have relatively modest computing capabilities, but are cheaper than hyperscale "brothers" and consume less electricity. Edge computing further reduces the cost of processing and transmitting data due to the fact that their source is closer than in the case of traditional data centers.

technology already use in retail, banking and the IoT industry. By experts' assessments, the number of data centers located at the edge will triple by 2025. At the same time, Markets Insider says that in three years the size of the market for peripheral computing will reach 6,7 billion dollars.
