IPv6 only networks in US government agencies

Office of Management and Budget of the United States Presidential Administration requested comments to the new IPv6 Migration Guide in US government agencies.

The new guidance notes that dual-stack support creates additional operational complexity and recommends that government internal networks move to IPv6-only instead of dual stack. Of course, public services must retain IPv4 addresses during the transition.

The guidance also requires that by 2023, all new systems put into service must support IPv6. Besides,

  • At least 20% of resources connected to the network should be IPv6-only by the end of 2023
  • At least 50% of resources connected to the network should be IPv6-only by the end of 2024
  • At least 80% of resources connected to the network should be IPv6-only by the end of 2025

This seems like a pretty aggressive plan and will put significant pressure on the industry. For example, various “state clouds” will have to at least support IPv6, and possibly operate in IPv6-only mode.
