From the history of the holiday — AdminFest 2011 in Rostov-on-Don

Celebration Friday, admin, and on their day. With contests, games and quirks. As it was 8 years ago.

Preparations for Admin Day 2011 began a few months earlier. I received this letter:

Dear ODMINS!

Not far off "Day of the system administrator"! Preparations for the third ADMINFEST IT festival have begun.

By tradition, the IT festival will be held in Rostov-on-Don as part of the All-Russian Gathering of System Administrators.

In the program of the holiday you are waiting for: Grand opening of the Festival, obstacle course, CD-bowling, as well as traditional sysadmin contests: throwing mice; keyboard assembly; the destruction of the scarecrow and, of course, a festive evening in your honor.

Teams - participants: teams are formed by 8 people, if you are a friendly, established team of admins, register your team and take part in the traditional sysadmin relay race.
Jury: Members of the CIO Club of the South of Russia - "KNOWN".

Participation in the event is free, without complex…

Registration is voluntary, BUT STRICTLY MANDATORY. Those who cannot attend will receive 20 outfits on the helpdesk OUT OF QUEUE.

Then another letter came, but more detailed:

17 days left before the start of AdminFesta!

If your whole working day revolves around a computer, you have a screwdriver in your pocket instead of Porshe keys, you know a lot about DNS and http, and the problems of the world around you are only problems of the world around you, you cannot stand stupidity and believe in Cthulhu, your favorite clothes are a sweater , frayed jeans and soft sneakers, and you identify yourself with a unique group of people whose profession is "system administrator", then we are waiting for you on July 29, 2011 to challenge the general illiteracy and misunderstanding of elementary things with traditional sports events and actions - on Adminfest!

This year, we invite you to plunge into the atmosphere of the revolution, from the party card and workdays to real slogans and a manifesto. To feel the magical aroma of freedom of speech, to express what is sore, to fight the unreasonable! We cannot wait for favors from nature; to take them from her is our task!

Our demands: “Down with computer illiteracy! Every User knows where the DNS is!”

There were such "rules" on both sides:

Oath "Admin":
I (full name) solemnly swear allegiance to the ideas of the admin brotherhood and the entire world of information technology, I swear:

- never deviate from the unwritten charter of the SA, honor its traditions and the spirit of the invisible union of information technologies;

- relatively honestly participate in the struggle for survival and in difficult times never set up friends. admins and not too often negligent users;

— transfer knowledge to your colleagues, sparing not a byte for the worthy and true to the spirit of brotherhood;

- be a model of culture, promise a lot, but work in moderation;

- when an intelligent user is found, do not interfere with his evolution, contemplate and quietly make fun of the spectacle;

- when consuming fuel, monitor the stack overflow and in no case allow it.

Judge's Oath:
I, the knower, starting this day to referee the Gigaolympic Games, I realize the responsibility to observe the spirit of the holiday and realize my unlimited and tempting power over the poor participants and swear:

- to judge and evaluate the results impartially, so that the strongest and smartest win, and not the one who needs more;

- set points in accordance with the quality of passing the test and give no more than the highest score for the competition, even if I know the numbers and more;

- do not allow fans and cheerleaders (and even pretty ones) to help the team;

- I renounce bribes in any form, from life-giving beer and greyhound puppies, and ending with broken old floppy disks.

Well, who voluntarily refuses such tempting invitations then?
So, having registered, I happened to get to this celebration of life!

On the evening of the long-awaited Friday, he arrived at the place indicated in the invitation. The landscape of the park has changed beyond recognition. Pleasing to the eye almost every corner and tree, wherever you look.

Along the path strewn with disks, it was easy to find the table of the organizers, at which registration took place, the issuance of an admin membership card and the search for your team to participate in competitions.

While the registration and acquaintance of the participants were taking place, the body painting tables were already working, on which the participants of the holiday acquired new additions to their skins.

Moreover, at the end of the event, for such pictures, the team members also received additional points, which in the end for the teams also influenced their final placement in the final table.

So I found a team for myself, having joined its ranks, I received the symbol of the team - a 256-meter memory bar (gnusmas DDR PC3200).

Other teams had symbols - a five-inch floppy disk, screw pancakes, and so on.

But such membership cards were issued at the beginning of the event to each participant.

My team is at the top in the photo, the captain is holding an organizational document in which after each competition they pasted the points earned - workdays.

When the teams were recruited (as a result, there were five teams of eight participants each), the host invited everyone to the stage, the organizers said their opening speeches and announced the start of the competitive part.

The host (DJ Minus, as he called himself, but in fact an IT specialist with experience as an Admin) talks about the competitions and the rules of the event. And the competitions themselves, which organizers have prepared.

The first competition for our team was "Web". The rules are simple - three members of the team for a while must go from the beginning to the end of the obstacle course from the drawn tapes, without repeating the path of the previous player.

That is, to find three different ways of passing through the barrier of the web.

It was, so to speak, a warm-up competition to stretch the muscles and brains for the next tasks.

Then there was the Relay competition, where three representatives of the team were asked, already in a competitive mode with another team, to run with dribbling a basketball in a gas mask and a machine gun in one of the hands to the judge at the end of the track, there to do fifteen squats and return to the starting point with the ball. position.

It was one of the tense and difficult competitions - here you have to act against the opposing team, and on speed and endurance.

But our fighters did not disappoint! And the support of the rest of the team members was very strong and loud here.

Then there was a calmer, but no less interesting Xonix.

Those who remember this game at the dawn of the 90s will quickly understand the rules.

A representative from each of the blindfolded teams went inside the rectangle.

They played up to three lives of each team - at first, one team controlled the voice of its player, who connected the passed segments inside the rectangle with a tape, and the representative of the other team at that time had to break the line that had not yet been completed to the end, also blindfolded, and controlled by voice team.

The movement of each player is incremental steps forward.

As a result, the team whose player segments the larger space before the end of all lives wins.

Then there were two also quiet competitions - sitibowling and throwing mice.

In bowling, you had to roll the disc forward and knock down the pins.

Since the pins were very thin, and the discs did not want to roll at all, few hit the target here, but still there were knocked down pins!

In throwing mice, accuracy was important - because the monitors were far away, and the device itself was light and not very aerodynamic.

But after the first test throw for aiming, out of the next three, even I hit the target once. Throwing all the representatives of the team, as in bowling.

The most stormy brainstorming competition - "crocodile", was held right next to its monument!

Here, the judges gave five Aichi words to each team, the representative of the team showed the meaning of each word with gestures.

We guessed everything, although there were also complex terms among those guessed: trackball, repository, switch and intranet. Here is the fifth word somehow flew out of my head ...

The team liked the game so much that the judges could not calm down for a long time after guessing every word.

After such mental work, the final competition became the strong point of all competitions. Tug-of-war from twisted pairs.

The main thing here was strength and strategy. The three strongest participants from each team gave battle to their opponents.

In the final, teams competed that outweighed their less powerful competitors. As a result, our team turned out to be the most high-torque.

Here, all the participants of the celebration fervently cheered for the teams. The musicians from the stage nearby also helped the players a lot with their IT songs.

The presenter on himself shows the stretching of the twisted pair:

After all competitive ups and downs, our captain received workday points for the last competition and pasted them into the team book.

While the judges of the event were counting the points and summing up the results, the organizers were slowly gathering the entourage, otherwise it was already getting dark, and there were problems with lighting the paths in the park.

Here are the results verified and transferred to the leader. Our team wins the overall standings, and all participants of the admin day rejoice.

The judges then presented the captains of all teams with gifts, and then the winning team members were given souvenirs (I got a USB mouse).

And the celebration of the day of the admin flowed into the stage of burning a scarecrow of user nonsense made by the organizers.

Our captain lit this miracle, which burned for a long time under the supervision of a specially trained comrade with a fire extinguisher. Then dances began around the fire to the sound of drums.

That's what happened in the end with the system unit, which was stuffed with iron after all!

There were so many joys and emotions that overwhelmed everyone and everything for a long time.

Then everyone stomped to the stage, where a small rock concert was waiting for us, closer communication with the organizers and all the participants of this insanely fun admin day!

This is how another crazy day of the system administrator went in our city.

Many thanks to the organizers of this celebration and to all the participants who found the strength and time to be in this team feud. After all, admins are power!
