Microsoft's tech support warns that there may be issues when installing the large May update — Windows 10 May 2019 Update.
The reason: blocking the ability to update the system on devices with an external hard drive or flash drive connected (via USB), as well as with an inserted memory card in a card reader, if one is present on the PC or laptop.
If the update is running on a computer with connected external drives, an error message will be displayed on the screen, the update process will stop, and the update can only be installed after disconnecting all external drives.

What is the problem with the update?
The Microsoft support article states:
During the update to the 'May 2019 Update', incorrect disk reassignment may occur on the respective devices to which an external USB device or SD memory card is connected.
Thus, if the user has a USB drive assigned the letter 'D', after updating to the 'May 2019 Update', the letter might change, for example, to 'E'.
The reason for this reassignment is the improper functioning of the disk reassignment mechanism during the update.
This is a very dangerous situation that can cause certain damage to some corporate systems, which may begin to malfunction after the update, so Microsoft simply fixed the situation — they blocked the installation of the May update on laptops with connected external drives.
Microsoft promises to release a fix for this problem in one of the upcoming updates, but not by the end of May 2019.
Interestingly, the rollout of the 'Windows 10 May 2019 Update' has not yet started, but the article from support.microsoft warning about the problem has already appeared. Microsoft is now taking preventive measures.
It turns out that this blocking of the 'May 2019 Update' will not affect all Windows 10 users, but only those who have the following updates installed:
