The Windows 10 May 2019 Update will not install when ... USB drives and memory cards are connected to the PC

Techpom from Microsoft warns that there may be problems installing the big May update - Windows 10 May 2019 Update.

Reason: blocking the ability to update the system on devices with an external hard drive or flash drive connected (via USB), as well as with an inserted memory card in a card reader, if there is one on a PC laptop.

If an update is launched on a computer with external media connected, an error message will be displayed on the screen, the update process will stop, and it will be possible to install the update only after disconnecting all external drives.

What is the problem with the update?

The Microsoft support article says:
"In the May 2019 Update update process, incorrect drive remapping may occur on the affected devices that have an external USB device or SD memory card connected to them."

Thus, if a user has a USB stick connected with a drive letter assigned to "D", then after updating to the "May 2019 Update", the letter could change to, for example, "E".

The reason for this remapping is the incorrect operation of the disk remapping mechanism during an update.

This is a very dangerous situation that can cause some damage to some corporate systems that will start to function incorrectly after the update, and Microsoft simply fixed the situation by blocking the installation of the May update on PC laptops with connected external media.

Microsoft promises to release a fix for this problem in one of the next updates, but not at the end of May 2019, when it will be.

An interesting moment here is that the distribution of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update update has not yet begun, and an article from support.microsoft warning about the problem has already appeared. Operate preventive methods now in Microsoft.

It turns out that this blocking of the May 2019 Update will not affect all Windows 10 users, but only those who have the updates installed:
- April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803),
- October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809).

There is a good chance that users with earlier versions of Windows 10 will be able to install the May 2019 Update without issue.
