Optane DC Persistent Memory - Optane in DIMM format

Optane DC Persistent Memory - Optane in DIMM format
Last week at the Intel Data Center Tech Summit, the company officially unveiled Optane memory based modules 3D XPoint in DIMM format, which is called Optane DC Persistent Memory (please do not confuse with Intel Optane Memory - a consumer line of caching drives).

Memory sticks have a capacity of 128, 256 or 512 GB, the pinout corresponds to the DIMM standard, however, of course, the hardware must support this type of memory - such support will appear in the next generation of Intel Xeon server platforms. As for the software support of the product, there has been an Open Source project by Intel for quite a long time. Persistent Memory Development Kit (PMDK, until the end of last year - NVML).

Unfortunately, the presentation lacks technical details such as power consumption, frequency, etc. - we will wait for the update in ARK. It is also unclear whether it will be possible to combine DRAM and Optane on the same memory controller channel. However, the memory that has just appeared will soon be able to β€œtouch” and measure something, however, so far only remotely. Optane DC Persistent Memory Online Testing Will Be Conducted This Summer - You Too you can become a memberif you work for an Intel partner company (it's never too late to become one, by the way). For testing, a server farm with 2 processor nodes, 256 GB of DRAM and 1 TB of Persistent Memory is provided.

Further, at the end of the year, deliveries of memory to individual projects will begin. Well, wide sales are planned for early 2019.
