The first study of the state of DevOps in Russia

In 2019, DORA and Google Cloud released a joint report The 2019 Accelerate State of DevOps: Elite performance, productivity, and scaling, from which we know how the world is with DevOps. This is part of the larger DevOps research that DORA has been doing since 2013. During this time, the company has already interviewed 31 IT professionals around the world.

The first study of the state of DevOps in Russia

The DORA study has been going on for six years now and it shows the dynamics of the development of DevOps practices in the world. But based on these results, we cannot objectively say what the state of DevOps is in Russia, how many companies have implemented practices, what tools they use and whether they benefit. Too little data - over the past couple of years, fewer than 60 people from Russia have participated in DORA surveys. We want to correct this situation and launch a study of the state of DevOps in Russia.

Note. We are launching a Russian-language large-scale interview about DevOps. You can jump right in and participate and contribute to DevOps development, and if you want to know more about the study and its goals, read on.

What is this study? This is a study of almost everything related to DevOps in Russian companies in a survey format. The task of compiling the survey and analyzing the data was undertaken by the company Express 42, and the company helps with the launch of the study Ontico (β€œConferences of Oleg Bunin”).

Expertise and knowledge of the industry is essential to designing the survey and interpreting the results.

  • The conclusions of the study should answer the questions of the companies. From the whole set of hypotheses, you need to choose the ones that are relevant for the industry.
  • Hypotheses are important to formulate correctly. For example, there are many concepts, methods, and tools hidden within continuous delivery. You can't ask the team about the application of the practice directly, because there is often no clear answer to this question. Therefore, for hypotheses, it is required to highlight the criteria by which we will judge the application of certain practices.
  • All survey participants should understand the questions in the same way. The wording of the questions should not push the participant to certain answers, and the answers themselves should assume all possible situations. In addition, we must make sure that we are asking about what we are checking.

Why do it? Recently Timur Batyrshin ΠΈ Andrey Shorin talked to Product Owners for DevOps Live, and did a mini-research. They found that the speed of experimentation determines the success of both a startup and a business with a mature product, which confirms the importance of DevOps for business. With our research, we will dig deeper, check what other benefits the business receives and understand how DevOps is developing in Russia:

  • we will see a slice of the industry for 2020;
  • we will understand whether engineering practices helped to survive the pandemic;
  • find out if DevOps is different in Russia and in the West;
  • we outline development zones.

How does it look? This is an anonymous survey in SurveyMonkey with 60 questions for 30-35 minutes.

What will we ask you? For example, about this:

  • What is the size of your company and what industry are you in?
  • How is your company feeling after the pandemic?
  • What tools do you use?
  • What practices do you use in your team?

Who can participate? IT-specialists of any companies any size: engineers, developers, team leads, CTO. We are interested to see which companies practice DevOps. We are waiting for answers from everyone who knows the word DevOps - participate!

How to participate? Take the survey yourself and promote among colleagues in the company. The more people who participate, the more accurate the results.

What will be the result? All data will be processed and presented in the form of a report with graphs. As a result, we will get a picture of engineering practices in the industry in order to understand the level of development of DevOps in companies. This will help to understand trending tools and practices (which will be more useful for engineers). The survey is only the first step towards describing the state of DevOps in Russia.

Where will the result appear? The report will be published on a separate page of the site Express 42. We will report separately on the results at the conference in special report. Conference Idea DevOps Live 2020 - look at DevOps from different angles: from product, security, from developers, engineers and business, so the report will be most welcome.

For all of us, this is an opportunity to take part in a historical event, and at the same time conduct an analysis and retrospective of ourselves and the company. For everyone who participates in the survey and leaves an e-mail, there are bonuses:

  • Lottery with valuable prizes: 1 ticket to the HighLoad ++ conference, 5 tickets to the DevOps Live conference and 30 books on DevOps.
  • Discount 42 thousand rubles for an annual subscription OTUS courses on programming, management, Data Science, information security and dozens of others.

Participate in research and share a link to it - leave a mark on the history of DevOps.
