Delta Amplon RT UPS First Look

There is a new addition to the Delta Amplon family - the manufacturer introduced a new series of 5-20 kVA devices.

Delta Amplon RT UPS First Look

Delta Amplon RT uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) feature high efficiency and compact dimensions. Previously, this family offered only relatively low-power models, but the new RT series now includes single-phase and three-phase units with power ratings up to 20 kVA. The manufacturer positions them for use in uninterruptible power supply systems for small computer rooms and server rooms, for protecting medical and telecommunications equipment, and for additional protection of critical equipment in large facilities. data centersDevices from the Amplon family are widely used in small and medium-sized businesses, healthcare institutions, and companies in the financial and telecommunications sectors.

Model range and topology

In the new series, Delta has released three UPS models: there is also Amplon R / RT for 1/2/3 kVA, which we do not consider in this review. We are interested in single-phase Amplon RT for 5, 6, 8 or 10 kVA (200-240 V) and three-phase Amplon RT for 15 or 20 kVA (380-415 V). Both models are based on double conversion topology, and their output power factor is unity. Single-phase devices are available to customers in standard and extended runtime versions, and three-phase devices are available in 3:1 (three-phase input, single-phase output) and 3:3 (three-phase input, three-phase output) configurations, which are changed using jumper bars.

Construction and configurations

The Delta Amplon RT monobloc UPSs are designed for floor or 19" rack mounting. Single-phase models with standard runtimes have built-in batteries and occupy 4 (5/6 kVA) or 5 (8/10 kVA) units in a rack. They also have a power distribution unit (PDB) and a maintenance bypass switch (MBB) installed by default. Extended runtime configurations are 2U high and require a 2U or 3U External Battery Cabinet (EBC) connection depending on battery type. There is only one network input in all single-phase models. The efficiency of the device is 95,5% in normal mode (double conversion enabled) and 99% in economy mode. Three-phase models occupy 2 units in a cabinet or rack, battery cabinets for them - another 2, 3 or 6 units. Users can choose between one or two network input configurations, and the efficiency of the device is 96,5% in normal mode and 99% in economy mode. All UPSs are equipped with an LCD display that, in three-phase models, allows you to configure the output configuration. The devices are easily built into racks of popular standard sizes.

Accumulators

The RT series is the first to introduce standard external compact (2U) battery cabinets (EBC) with lithium-ion batteries, which are available in both three-phase and single-phase models. In addition, customers can purchase cabinets with lead-acid batteries (VRLA). For unification, all Amplon RT models use the same EBC with flexible configuration - this allows you to optimize system purchase costs, scale battery life over a wide range and simplify inventory management. VRLA battery packs are mounted in a cabinet using plastic cases, which eliminates the possibility of electrolyte leakage. Batteries can be replaced individually without replacing the entire group and without shutting down the UPS, and the EBC is connected using a plug-and-play connector.

Parallel work

Up to four Delta Amplon RT UPSs can be connected in parallel for power expansion and N+1 redundancy (only models with extended battery life support the combination in a single-phase line). With this connection, system configurations with shared batteries are also available to customers, which reduce the footprint of equipment and reduce the load on building structures.

Security and management

Delta Amplon RT allows you to configure the connection of loads based on priority and equally efficiently power both resistive and reactive loads. They stepwise regulate the speed of the cooling fans, predict their service life and give a timely signal when a failed fan needs to be replaced. Thanks to intelligent charging and discharging algorithms, battery life is extended, and built-in diagnostics and battery aging detection systems allow you to replace them in time. The graphic LCD display gives personnel access to all control and monitoring functions. To connect to a computer, USB and RS-232 ports are used, in addition, the devices have an RS-485 port for data exchange via the ModBus protocol or communication with a cabinet on lithium-ion batteries. The MINI slot allows expansion boards to be installed. The UPS comes with proprietary management and monitoring software, and the devices can be easily integrated with third-party infrastructure management solutions.

Conclusion

Having looked at the new uninterruptible power supplies and having no real experience in their operation, it is difficult to draw any serious conclusions, but at first glance, the update of the popular Delta Amplon family seems to be successful. The manufacturer significantly increased the power of the devices and made a purely single-phase model line three-phase, without sacrificing its main advantage - compact size and high power density. These are the junior models among Delta's double conversion rack solutions, but in terms of scalability they are not inferior to more expensive products and will certainly find their customers in Russia.
