Introducing 3CX V16 Update 4 Beta with VoIP client as a Chrome extension and Android video app

This week we introduced two new releases - 3CX V16 Update 4 Beta and a new 3CX client for Android with video calling support! Update 4 Beta introduced a Chrome extension that implements a VoIP softphone as a background browser application. You can receive calls without leaving the current program or opening the 3CX web client. You can respond instantly through a small pop-up window in the lower right corner of your desktop.

Call notifications arrive even if the browser is minimized or even closed - the extension does not require a running web client.

Click-to-Call functionality is now integrated into the new extension. When you are browsing a web page or working in CRM and want to dial a number, just click on it. The number will be intercepted and dialed directly from the active application.

To install the extension, go to the 3CX web client and open in another tab extension page. Then click “Install 3CX extension for Chrome”, and in the web client click “Activate 3CX extension for Chrome”.

The 3CX extension for Google Chrome requires 3CX V16 Update 4 Beta and Chrome V78 or higher installed. If you have a previous 3CX Click to Call extension installed, uninstall it before installing the new extension.

If you have Update 3 or an earlier version installed, first install Update 4 and restart the browser with the web client open so that the extension can be activated.

The 3CX v16 Update 4 Beta release also added support for new storage and backup protocols:

  • Protocols can now be used to backup configuration and call recordings FTP, FTPS, FTPES, SFTP and SMB.
  • The 3CX distribution includes a utility for transferring conversation archives from Google Drive to the local disk of the PBX server without losing information about the recording files.
  • Improved DNS resolver (processing of “Invite/ACK” requests for some SIP operators).

Updating to Update 4 Beta is done as usual, in the “Updates” section. You can also install the 3CX v16 Update 4 Beta distribution for Windows or Linux:

3CX for Android – video communication for business

Together with Update 4 Beta, we released the final release of the 3CX application for Android with integrated video calls. We also tried to implement support for a wide variety of Android smartphones, so that almost all users will be able to use the new application.

Now you can call the subscriber, and then press the “Video” button and switch to a video call. Video calling works between the new 3CX Android app, the web client, and video phones or intercoms that support Google's VP8 and VP9 codecs (see below).

The client also includes support for the Google AAudio API. Google AAudio is a modern alternative to the widely used OpenSL (Open Sound Library). It is designed to deliver high-quality audio in applications that require minimal latency. New API support is automatically enabled for the latest phone models - check out list of compatible devices. The new app also automatically detects device capabilities and disables the Telecom API for certain models to avoid echo.

After numerous tests and optimizations (thanks to our testers!) the application began to support even more smartphones. The latest models are supported: Pixel 4, Galaxy Note 10, S10+, Xiaomi Mi9. More will be supported in the near future Devices.

Other changes and improvements

  • Fixed an error when trying to switch from an IP address to a server's FQDN when making a call.
  • Colleagues you communicate with frequently can now be added to your Favorites section for quick communication.
  • Added a drop-down filter in the “Status” section to display all groups (local and from other PBXs) and their members.
  • Added call waiting signal for incoming GSM calls during SIP calls. Answering a GSM call puts the SIP call on hold.
  • During a GSM call, incoming SIP calls are considered busy and forwarded according to the specified forwarding rules.
  • Now you can simply tap on a voicemail message to automatically listen to it through the built-in Google Play player.
  • Added the “Don’t ask again” option when blocking application access to contacts. The request will not be repeated.
  • Files received from other users are now stored in a special folder on the device in accordance with Android 10 standards.
  • Added a "Contacts" drop-down filter that displays all contacts, only 3CX contacts, or only device address book contacts.
  • The maximum number of participants for on-demand conferences is set to 3. For larger conferences, use the "Conference" section in the application side menu.
  • The item “Disable power optimization” immediately takes you to the “Exceptions from power saving mode” section in Android settings.

The new application is already available in Google Play.

Video communication between the 3CX web client, Android application and video intercom

After the release of new 3CX applications with support for video communication, it became possible to use them in conjunction with video phones and video intercoms with support for modern Google VP8 and VP9 codecs. 3CX Web Client and video intercom will work together - an office or home can be controlled by a Fanvil iSeries door intercom and a free 3CX PBX.

The visitor presses the speed dial button assigned to a specific user/extension in the PBX. This user receives a video call through the web client interface or the 3CX Android application. You can also forward the call to your mobile phone if you are not there at the moment (but then you can only answer by voice).

If you are often away from your desk, set up call forwarding rules to other users and the video call will be forwarded to the next available user/secretary. You can also set the call to 3CX priority queueso that a call from the intercom always has priority among queue operators.

Visitors at the office reception or, conversely, in a room with limited access can press the speed dial button on the video intercom to communicate through your web client. The same functionality can be used for video surveillance of a warehouse or other controlled area.
