Introducing 3CX V16 Update 4 and Unified FQDN 3CX WebMeeting

Just before the holidays, we have released the highly anticipated 3CX V16 Update 4! We also have a new MCU generic name 3CX WebMeeting and new storage types for backups and 3CX conversation recordings. Let's consider everything in order.

3CX V16 Update 4

The next update of 3CX brings a choice of audio devices in the web client, the final release of the 3CX extension for Chrome, and new types of backup storage. In addition, Update 4 received a number of stability and security improvements that were made by the developers during the testing phase.

As is known, the update introduced the 3CX extension for Google Chrome, which implements a browser-based VoIP softphone. The final version of the extension has already been published in chrome web store. The web softphone allows you to receive notifications in calls, even if the browser is minimized or closed altogether, and also intercepts clicks on numbers on web pages - and dials them directly or through a connected IP phone.

In the Chrome store, search for the word "3CX" and install the extension in your browser. Then log in with your account to the 3CX Web Client and click "Activate 3CX Chrome Extension". The extension requires 3CX V16 Update 4 and Google Chrome V78 and above installed. If you have the old 3CX Click to Call extension installed, you need to disable it. Users of V16 Update 3 and earlier must first install Update 4 and then reload the web client page for the option to activate the extension.

Update 4 also introduced a selection of PC audio devices in the 3CX Web Client (and thus the Chrome extension). You can select audio devices for Speaker (where you hear the voice) and Speakerphone (where you hear the ringer). This is very convenient if you use a headset - now you can output calls to external speakers and hear what is calling you. The choice of audio devices is done in the web client section "Settings" > "Personalization" > "Audio / Video".

Installing the update is done as usual - in the 3CX interface, go to the "Updates" section, select "v16 Update 4" and click "Download Selected".

You can also install a clean distribution of v16 Update 4:

Single FQDN for 3CX WebMeeting

This week we also made a useful improvement that system administrators will appreciate - the universal network name for the 3CX WebMeeting service is "mcu.3cx.net". If you have a secure network, you can only open this FQDN in the firewall settings. Now you do not need to know and open each IP address separately. The new FQDN is also useful for prioritizing traffic between you and the WebMeeting service.

You can find out which addresses β€œmcu.3cx.net” corresponds to with the standard command nslookup mcu.3cx.net.

If a server is temporarily unavailable, its IP address will be automatically removed from the list.

New supported storage types for call recordings

We also want to draw your attention to the new types of supported storage for conversation records that were introduced in v16 Update 4 Beta. These are SFTP, Windows Shares and Secure FTP (FTPS & FTPES). Now the 3CX server can be integrated into a network environment that supports a variety of technologies. For example, SSH (Secure SHell) is one of the most popular file transfer protocols on the Internet, supported by a variety of platforms and providing cryptographic data protection.

To use an SSH server, go to Backup > Location. and provide the path and credentials (or the server's OpenSSH key). If you need to create or convert an OpenSSH key, see this leadership. Setting up your own OpenSSH server is described here.

The SMB protocol is familiar to all Windows administrators. By the way, it is also successfully supported on NAS devices, Raspberry Pi, Linux and Mac (Samba).

Using it is just as easy - specify the path of the SMB shares and access credentials.
By the way, if you are faced with the task of synchronizing backups or conversation recordings between multiple servers, we recommend using the Linux rsync utility. Learn more about its use in this article.
