We share video recordings of the talks from the Selectel MeetUp: system administration.
A brief background
Selectel MeetUp is a gathering featuring short talks and live interaction. The idea behind the event is simple: to listen to great speakers, engage with colleagues, exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and hear how others solved them. In general, it encompasses everything referred to as networking in the IT community.
We started with small meetups focused on DevOps and high availability in information systems. In the last event, the speakers were all from Selectel, but based on our DevOps experience, we realized we needed to invite interesting folks from other companies as well. Additionally, the titles should be clearer than just the sequence number of the meetup. Thus, we relaunched the event this year.
On September 12, the first meeting in the new format took place. Along with speakers from 'VKontakte,' UseDesk, and Studyworld, we discussed the state and prospects of customer service in the Russian IT sector. We decided not to stop there.
On October 3, a meetup for system administrators was held at Selectel. This time, we invited speakers from Cogia.de, 'Ostrovek,' and Digital Vision Labs. Topics included Kubernetes, legacy code in modern systems, and the collaboration of administrators with other departments. ImagineāPetersburg, evening, rain, and our conference hall is filled with sysadmins. How could you not be inspired here? Vadim Isakanov even came all the way from Chelyabinsk for his talk.

Experience in infrastructure solutions in 4 presentations
noVNC consoles for dedicated servers, Alexander Nikiforov, Selectel
Our task was to provide clients with remote access to server management. This type of access relies on a BMC module enabled on the motherboard. However, direct access through a public IP address poses serious security risks, and attempts at isolation complicate the client experience. Alexander Nikiforov discussed how we addressed this issue at Selectel, what we started a couple of years ago, and what happens under the hood when launching the KVM console from our control panel.
Auto-scaling in Kubernetes, Vadim Isakanov, Cogia.de
One of the key features of Kubernetes is the use of only the necessary resources when clusters and applications scale themselves automatically. Auto-scaling tools in Kubernetes are available for free "out of the box." Vadim Isakanov from Cogia.de shared insights about these tools and his path working with Kubernetes.

A journey through Haproxy documentation, Denis Bozhok, "Ostrovok"
The team at Ostrovok.ru supports around 130 microservices. When someone searches for a hotel in St. Petersburg, the request goes to the result aggregation service, then to their own microservice, Supplierd, which dispatches requests to external hotel providers. This involves about 450,000 connections at the same time. Initially, the company used Nginx for working with external providers, but now they are using Haproxy. Denis Bozhok spoke about the nuances that arise in such operations.
"After school, I trained to be a chef, then got the wrong recipes, and honestly, everything after that is a blur, and now I am responsible for infrastructure at "Ostrovok"."
How to unite different teams in 6 weeks, Dmitry Popov, Digital Vision Labs
At one point, the Digital Vision Labs team faced a growth problem: the business was ready to participate in new projects, but the IT infrastructure was not keeping pace. The systems administration department was constantly in crisis mode, with tasks piling up that could not be resolved. Efficiency was decreasing. Dmitry Popov spoke about the non-obvious reasons for the situation and how they managed to improve project management.
"At the time we realized that we needed to change something, about 70% of requests from project managers were not completed on time. Another 25% of requests were lost in the system. And 100% of requests came without specifications. Today, 27% of requests are overdue (we still have room to grow), 0% of requests are lost in the system, and 9% of requests come without specifications."
