"Sovereign Runet" will negatively affect the development of IoT in Russia

Participants in the Internet of Things market believe that the draft law on the "sovereign Runet" can slow down the development of the Internet of Things in the Internet. Such areas as "smart city", transport, industrial and other industries will be affected, about which сообщаСт "Kommersant".

The bill itself was approved State Duma in the first reading on February 12. Representatives of companies involved in the development of the Internet of Things in Russia have drawn up an official letter to the authors of the initiative. Now the Association of Internet of Things Market Participants includes such operators as Rostelecom, MTS, ER-Telecom, MTT, etc.

The direct threat is that the implementation of the project will increase the delays in the transmission of data packets for IoT devices on core networks. First of all, we are talking about devices that are used in smart city systems, transport infrastructure and the industrial Internet.

The fact is that the bill indicates the need to limit access to prohibited resources by controlling the content of traffic using special equipment on the networks of operators. β€œThis may lead to technical failures and degradation of the quality of services, including for IoT devices, which may also have a negative impact on smart city projects,” says MTS representative Alexey Merkutov.

Other telecom operators reported agreeing with this position. The fact is that the development of the Internet of things is moving towards applications that are critical to delays. These are unmanned vehicles, tactile Internet (transmission of tactile sensations with minimal delay) and others. And if additional elements are introduced into communication systems, this can reduce their technical efficiency.

β€œTechnological development is outstripping the reaction rate of regulators around the world, and the creation of additional barriers may adversely affect the provision of in-demand Internet of Things services,” said Alexander Minov, CEO of the National Research Institute of Technology and Communications.

Government representatives agree that the implementation of the norms of the law on the "sovereign Internet" should not affect the deterioration of communications in the Russian Federation.

In addition to delays in data transfer, the letter points out another drawback of the project - possible problems with the infrastructure of the domain name system (DNS), which is actively used in IoT applications. Now the proportion of protocols that do not use traditional DNS servers is gradually increasing. In the next two to three years, such developments are expected to be implemented by major technology companies, including Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook. New technologies imply the development, in fact, of an alternative to the DNS infrastructure; its appearance is not provided for by the bill. So the rules of the draft, which relate to the DNS, do not provide a guarantee in the event of an external threat regime.
