Face recognition terminals in access control systems

Facial recognition in access control systems meets the growing demand for contactless identification solutions. Today, this method of biometric identification is a global trend: the average annual growth of the market for systems based on face recognition is estimated by analysts at 20%. According to forecasts, in 2023 this figure will increase to 4 billion USD.

Face recognition terminals in access control systems

Integration of terminals with access control system

Face recognition as an identification method can be used in ACS for access control, time tracking and integration with CRM and ERP systems. The leading manufacturers of face recognition terminals in the Russian market are Hikvision, Suprema, Dahua and ZKteco.

The integration of face recognition terminals with the access control system can be carried out in three ways, the difference of which lies in the communication interface and the SDK functionality. The first method allows you to add new data of employees or visitors directly in the ACS interface, without adding it to the terminals - using the terminal SDK. With the second method, adding new users is carried out both in the ACS interface and directly in the terminals, which is less convenient and more labor-intensive. In both cases, the connection is made via the Ethernet interface. The third way is to connect via the Wiegand interface, but in this case, the terminals and the ACS will have separate databases.

The review will consider solutions with an Ethernet connection. The ability to add users in the system interface is determined by the terminal SDK. The wider the capabilities of the ACS, the more functionality it will be possible to implement using the terminals. For example, the integration of the PERCo-Web access control system with Suprema terminals allows you to add data directly in the system software interface. Other features include capturing and saving photos of employees and visitors for identification, and configuring and managing devices online.

All events of passages through terminals are stored in the system. The system allows you to assign an algorithm for reactions to events received from terminals. When an employee with face recognition passes, you can generate a notification event that will be sent to Viber or the e-mail of the system operator. The system supports Face Station 2 and FaceLite terminals from Suprema, ProfaceX, FaceDepot 7A, Facedepot 7 V, SpeedFace V5L from ZKteco. When an employee or visitor passes with an elevated temperature, an event is generated in the ACS, on the basis of which access can be automatically blocked.

The determining factors in choosing terminals for operation as part of an access control system are identification security, speed and accuracy of operation, and ease of use. The reliability of identification primarily determines the presence of protection against emulation and the possibility of two-factor identification. Speed - high speed face recognition, ensuring uninterrupted operation of equipment even in conditions of heavy flow of people. Recognition accuracy is affected by the efficiency of the applied algorithm, the number of face and user templates in the terminal's memory, as well as the parameters of the camera in different lighting conditions. Ease of use is provided by the language interface, dimensions and weight of the device. Ease of integration, as noted above - the communication interface and the terminal SDK. Facilitation of integration is also facilitated by the fact that the turnstiles have mounts for face recognition terminals.

Emulation Protection

Face recognition can be based on 2D or 3D technologies. The first of them is more budgetary, which affects the cost of terminals. Among its disadvantages are high lighting requirements, lower statistical reliability compared to 3D, inability to take into account facial expressions. To increase the accuracy of identification of terminals based on 2D infrared cameras allow.

Terminals using 3D technology are more expensive, but provide high accuracy and reliability of identification and demonstrate the ability to work in low light conditions. In Suprema and ZKteco terminals, live face detection based on infrared illumination is used to protect against photo presentation. Hikvision terminals use an algorithm for deep machine learning and detection of the authenticity of facial biometric data. Dahua facial recognition terminals use artificial intelligence and deep learning technology with support for vitality detection.

Identification speed

The speed of identification of face recognition terminals is especially important for objects with an intensive flow of visitors: offices of large companies, industrial enterprises, places of mass stay of people. High identification speed prevents queuing and maximizes throughput. Hikvision DS-K1T331W, Dahua ASI7223X-A and ASI7214X terminals recognize faces in just 0,2 seconds. For the DS-K1T606MF model, identification is carried out in 0,5 seconds, for the DS-K1T8105E, in less than 1 second. The identification speed of Face Station and FaceDepot 7A terminals is less than 1 second.

Two-factor identification

Face recognition terminals in access control systems

A convenient solution for working in ACS is face recognition terminals that also support other identification methods: for example, access by card, fingerprint, palm or smartphone. Such solutions make it possible to strengthen access control to an object due to two-factor identification. The FaceLite and FaceStation 2 terminals are distinguished by the presence of a built-in reader for contactless access cards; in other models we are considering, the reader can be connected additionally. ZKteco terminals also support palm and code identification. Hikvision DS-K1T606MF terminals support fingerprint and Mifare card identification, DS-K1T8105E has a built-in EM-Marine card reader, a proximity card reader can be connected to the DS-K1T331W terminal. The ASI7214X terminal also supports proximity cards and fingerprints.

temperature measurement

One of the drivers for the growth of the market for face recognition solutions in access control systems was the Covid19 pandemic, so face recognition terminals with the ability to control body temperature have become widespread. This functionality from the models we are considering makes it possible to implement SpeedFace V5L terminals, which also determine the presence of a mask on the face. Temperature measurement is non-contact, which reduces the risk of infection transmission and minimizes
the need for antiseptic treatment of the device after each measurement.
A convenient solution is to set temperature control parameters and the presence of a mask in the ACS interface, if the terminal SDK allows you to enter data directly into the system.

Number of face templates

Template capacity is the maximum number of datasets that can be stored in the system. The higher this indicator, the higher the identification accuracy. The Face Station 2 and FaceLite terminals have a large recognition capacity. They process up to 900 templates. ProFace X terminals store 000 templates in memory, FaceDepot 30A and Facedepot 000 B - 7 templates each, SpeedFace V7L - 10.
The ASI7223X-A and ASI7214X terminals can hold 100 templates each.

Number of users and events

The number of users in the memory of the face recognition terminal determines the number of maximum possible identifiers for access to the object. The larger the object, the higher this indicator should be. The memory of the Face Station 2 and FaceLite controllers is rated for 30000 users, as is the ProfaceX memory. FaceDepot 7A, Facedepot 7B, SpeedFace V5L process the data of 10 people. The memory of the terminal DS-K000T1E is designed for 8105 users, DS-K1600T1 - for 331, DS-K3000T1MF - for 606 users. The ASI3200X-A and ASI7223X terminals process the data of 7214 users. In the memory of face recognition terminals, all events about passages through this terminal are stored. The largest number of events in memory allows you to build reports for the longest selected period of time.

Face Station 2 and FaceLite terminals have the largest event log volume - 5 million. ProfaceX has 1 million. ASI7223X-A and ASI7214X terminals can accommodate 300 events each. SpeedFace V000L has a log capacity of 5 events, DS-K200T000W has 1 events. FaceDepot 331A and Facedepot 150V terminals and DS-K000T7MF have 7 events. The DS-K1T606E terminal has the most modest amount of memory - only 100 events.

Language interface

Not all face recognition terminals on the Russian market have a Russian-language interface, so its presence may be an important selection factor.
The Russian-language interface is available in ProFace X, SpeedFace V5L terminals. In the Face Station 2 terminal, Russian-language firmware is available upon request. The Face Station 2 terminal has an English interface. DS-K1T331W supports English, Spanish and Arabic, Russian interface is not available yet.

Integration with turnstiles

Face recognition terminals in access control systems

One of the important factors when choosing equipment for organizing access by face recognition is the ease of installation on the turnstile. It is necessary to make sure that the manufacturer of the barrier devices offers special brackets for attaching the terminals to the turnstile.
