Why does a bim manager get 100 thousand and how to become one

This article will help two types of people:

  1. For those who want to change jobs, they know how to write simple code and know about construction sites and drawings firsthand.
  2. Those who study at the construction department and think where they want to go.

Bim managers can receive 100 β‚½. This is almost four times the salary of a typical Russian - the most common is 000 β‚½.

I am Andrey Mekhontsev. With my Altec Systems team, I help construction companies implement BIM. Prior to that, he worked as a bim manager in one company for four years. Now I'll use my story as an example:

  1. What do bim managers get paid for?
  2. Why bim managers are in demand
  3. How to become a bim manager
  4. How to get to work

A warning
Below I describe only my experience, and do not pretend to be the ultimate truth. The experience may be different from yours, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. I warned you.

This article is only suitable for those who understand the basics of building design. If you don't know, the article might be infuriating. If you want to understand the basics of design, let me know in the comments. I warned you.

What do bim managers get paid for?

I worked as a bim manager in a design company. There I made sure that the BIM project turned out without errors and on time.

Automated routine processes to bring the design speed to the level that was with AutoCAD. He helped to find and eliminate errors in the project so that the customer would not fine the company. Wrote work standards so that each employee knew what, when and why to model.

  • Somehow we started doing a project with engineering networks in BIM. The engineers had a problem: Revit does not know how to form a nine-graph. Because the program is American, and GOSTs are ours. I opened Dynamo and started making a plug-in for Revit to generate a nine-graph.
  • I spent the next week trying to write a plugin. But at work, they threw a bunch of small tasks on me, which, in theory, should have been done by a BIM coordinator and a BIM author. As a result, writing the plug-in stretched for almost a month.

Often the bim manager does everything on this list.

We made sketches about how small tasks stretch out long-term ones. Open the video and rewind to 01:46.

If not, here's a summary.

Andrey, for some reason I don’t see my partitions on the floor plan?
- Wait, I'll finish it now, I'll show you

β€” Andrey, will you finish the library of objects soon?
- On the week

- Andrey!
- What?
- Do you want coffee?
- No, do not distract

- Andrey, here the boss writes to the chat, says that our regular client wants you to introduce BIM to him to the very tomatoes
- Yeah, now I'm just cloning myself

- Andrey, the boss asked to connect the printer
- Why me?
- I don’t know, I said that you are an IT specialist

- Andrey, the customer called me here, said that at his construction site, pipes do not fall into holes. Get in touch and show him that they are not building according to those drawings, but in the project everything is okay.

- Andrey, we have sabotage again: Nikolai Semenovich started working in AutoCAD again
β€” Again what? Okay, I'll talk to him now.

Why bim managers are in demand

I have identified four reasons:

  • BIM started to be used all over the world
  • In Russia, the majority work without BIM at all
  • Soon everyone in Russia will want BIM
  • Bim managers are few

BIM started to be used all over the world

In 2011, only 10% of companies in the UK were using BIM. In 2019, their number increased to 70%. So it is written in UK National BIM Report. The rest of the world is following the same trend.

BIM helps save money and time. Therefore, most of the companies in the UK, USA and Singapore use it.

BIM is used by design, construction and operating companies. Here's how:

The growth of the global BIM market is creating a demand for bim managers. If more and more companies start using it, then more and more employees are required for this.

In Russia, the majority work without BIM at all

Many Russian companies do not yet see the value of BIM. That's why they refuse to work with him. They usually cite the following reasons:

People are changeable. Someone in management will stumble upon this article, understand the prospects, allocate money and post vacancies. And since the majority in Russia works without BIM, there can be dozens or even hundreds of such changeable leaders.

Soon everyone in Russia will want BIM

After 2021, the state will only accept projects in BIM. Take a look at the map below. For six years now, the process of transition to BIM-technologies has been going on.

No construction company wants to lose such a large customer. Russian companies are likely to do everything to switch to BIM. Therefore, in the coming years, they will be looking for and hiring bim managers. But there is a problem.

Bim managers are few

Not a single university trains bim managers. Those who are working now have learned everything themselves. Received a civil engineering education, worked with drawings and at a construction site, mastered Revit, Dynamo, NavisWorks.

I went to hh.ru and found out that there are only 8-11 people for a bim manager vacancy in Russia.

For comparison: 300-400 people apply for the vacancy of a "copywriter" in a more or less large company. The difference is colossal.

This means that getting into bim-managers is easy - the competition is low.

How to become a bim manager

To become a bim manager, in my experience, you need four things:

  • Know and love programming
  • Know Revit from A to Z
  • Be able to explain the complex in the most accessible language
  • Experience in construction and drafting

I started programming since my school days. In the 7th grade I started writing websites in HTML and created servers on my computer for multiplayer games. I wanted to understand something complex and incomprehensible myself. It was interesting to look for answers to questions about how to do all this, on my own, without YouTube.

I started learning Revit in college.

When I was asked to draw a term paper by hand, I learned AutoCAD and made a term paper in it. Too lazy to do it by hand. But my abilities were not appreciated: I got a deuce and found out who the conservatives are.

When classmates started ordering term papers, I stopped working in AutoCAD. Reading specifications by hand was unbearable. I learned Revit and started doing everything there.

I learned to explain the complex in the most accessible language when I sold term papers to students. They did not understand that I did this to them in Revit. I had to spend hours explaining how to open a drawing in AutoCAD and how to protect it in front of teachers.

This is how I got the right work experience.

At first I went to work at the construction site of construction and installation works for monolithic works. There I coordinated the work of workers, handed over the work to the customer and took concrete at night.

Then I worked as a PTO engineer. There I did executive documentation. I was too lazy to count the bricks by hand. That's why I used Revit.

Then he tried to work as a design engineer. There I created drawings of the KZh brand. I once tried to convince management to start using BIM. Twisted at the temple, they say, we do not need.

How to get to work

I posted my resume hh. I wrote that I worked there and there, did this and that there, attached the work and added that I was ready to work for food if I worked with BIM specialists.

The next day I was invited for an interview. I arrived at the office. There, designers began to communicate with me: they asked me to show my work and asked about my work experience. The conversation proceeded without manipulation. And then there was a test: I was asked, using the example of my work, how I created families, what is the logic behind their construction, can I work in Dynamo.

Everything didn't go so smoothly. When I was asked to demonstrate work on the numbering of rooms, the program gave an error. I corrected it right away. This surprised the interlocutor and I was immediately hired as a bim manager. They gave me a salary of 30 rubles and a place in the office.

I liked the work, but I was slow in solving problems. Therefore, I began to study additional material in the evenings and on weekends. This is probably why I worked as a bim manager for a long time. A couple of years later, I could claim something like this:

Instead of conclusions

This is my first time here and I don't know if there are people from my industry here. If you're here, let me know in the comments. Let's meet and chat.
