July 14, 2020, Vicenza, Italy — Leading global developer of open-source extensions Zextras has released its own version of the popular Zimbra mail server with downloads from its own repository and support. Zextras solutions enhance the Zimbra mail server with collaboration features, communication, support for storage, mobile devices, real-time backup and recovery, and multi-tenant infrastructure administration.
Zimbra is a widely known open-source mail server used by millions of users across all sectors of the economy, in government and educational institutions, and service providers worldwide. The Zimbra trademark is owned by the American company Synacor. In April 2020, Synacor changed its policy on open-source publication. Starting with the release of Zimbra 9, the project stopped publishing the Zimbra Open Source Edition and limited releases to only the commercial version of the product. This caused a negative reaction from the open-source Zimbra user community, and under their pressure, Synacor opened the Zimbra 9 source codes for creating custom builds and supporting them independently.
In this situation, Zextras stepped in to help Zimbra OSE users, creating its own Zimbra 9 Open Source build based on the source code provided by Synacor without any significant changes. Thanks to Zextras's position, users worldwide have been able to defend their right to use up-to-date versions of the popular product with expert-level support.
In addition to supporting its own branch of Zimbra 9 Open Source, Zextras has delighted users with new product features: displaying multiple emails in a cascade in the web client, expanded calendar and task functionalities, Zimbra chat, and much more.
