Developers of the Raspberry Pi project have announced the start of work on a new open-source video driver for the VideoCore VI graphics accelerator used in Broadcom chips. The new driver is based on the Vulkan graphics API and is primarily aimed at use with Raspberry Pi 4 boards and future models (the capabilities of the GPU VideoCore IV, which was supplied in the Raspberry Pi 3, are insufficient for a full implementation of Vulkan).
The development of the new driver, in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, is being carried out by the company . Currently, only a preliminary prototype of the driver has been prepared, capable of performing basic demonstrations. The first beta release, which can be used to run some real applications, is expected to be published in the second half of 2020.
Additionally, it has been announced about of the Khronos Mesa driver (previously ), which is recognized as fully compatible with OpenGL ES 3.1. The driver is certified using the Broadcom BCM2711 chip used in Raspberry Pi 4 boards. Obtaining certification allows for official claims of compatibility with graphics standards and the use of associated trademarks from Khronos.
