Google Maps is 15 years old. The service received a major update

Google Maps was launched in February 2005. Since then, the application has undergone significant changes and is now the leader among modern mapping tools that provide satellite interactive maps online. Today, the application is actively used by more than a billion people around the world, so the service decided to celebrate its 15th anniversary with a major update.

Starting today, Android and iOS users have access to an updated interface, divided into 5 tabs.

  • What's next? The tab contains information about places nearby: food outlets, shops, restaurants and attractions. Each place contains a rating, reviews and other information.
  • Regular routes. It displays the best routes to regularly visited places. The tab contains constantly updated information about the situation on the roads, calculates the time of arrival at the destination and suggests alternative routes if necessary.
  • Saved. This stores a list of places that the user decides to add to favorites. You can plan trips to any place and share the tagged places with other users.
  • Add. With this section, users can share their knowledge of the area: write reviews, share information about places, add details about roads and leave photos.
  • News. This new tab displays information about popular places recommended by local experts and city magazines like Afisha.

In addition to the updated interface, the app icon has also been changed. According to Google, the new logo symbolizes the evolution of the service. The company also notes that for a limited time, users will be able to see the icon of the festive car by turning on the navigation on their device.

A year earlier, a public transport occupancy forecast service appeared in the application. Based on past trips, it showed how crowded the bus, train or subway was. Now the service has gone further and added a few more important details.

  • Temperature. For a more comfortable ride, users can now know the temperature inside a public vehicle in advance.
  • Special abilities. They help to choose the route taking into account the needs of people with disabilities.
  • Security. Shows information about the presence of CCTV or security cameras in public transport.

It is noted that the detailed information is based on data from passengers who shared their experiences. These features will launch globally in March 2020. Their availability will depend on the region and municipal transport services. In addition, in the coming months, Google Maps will expand the capabilities of Live Maps (LiveView), which were introduced by the company last year. The function shows virtual pointers in the real world on the screen of the device.
