iOS 13.4 can turn iPhone and Apple Watch into car keys

It became known that the first beta version of the iOS 13.4 software platform, which was released yesterday, contains the CarKey API, thanks to which users will be able to use iPhone smartphones and Apple Watch smart watches as keys for vehicles with support for NFC technology.

According to available data, to lock and unlock car doors, as well as start the engine, the user will not need to undergo identity verification through Face ID or Touch ID. All that is required is to keep the mobile device within range of the signal reader, and the function will work even if the gadget is discharged or turned off.

The message also says that based on the new API, a car sharing function will be implemented, which will allow the owner of the car to allow a relative or friend to drive it. To do this, you will need to send an appropriate invitation in the Wallet application, after confirmation of which the recipient will be able to open the sender’s car with his mobile gadget. Additionally, the Wallet app is used to pair the device with the car. Once your device is within range of an NFC reader, a notification will appear in the Wallet app, and all available functions can then be delegated to your smartwatch.

The ability to use your smartphone as a key is not a new concept. However, it will obviously take a long time before the feature becomes widely available. This is because manufacturers must implement support for the new CarKey API in their vehicles.
