The younger generation doesn't know, and the older one has long forgotten. But before Netscape Navigator began its triumphant march across the web, and later went head-to-head with Internet Explorer, there was one browser whose core principles and features were embodied in all its modern counterparts. It was called Mosaic.
Its life was short-lived. Mosaic was developed from 1993 to 1997. Then, the company Mosaic Communications Corporation was renamed Netscape Communications Corporation, where the well-known Netscape Navigator was born, taking key developments from Mosaic.
The last version for Linux was released in 1996.
