Finding Order in IT Chaos: Organizing Your Own Development

Finding Order in IT Chaos: Organizing Your Own Development

Each of us (I really hope for it) ever thought about how to effectively organize their development in a particular area. This issue can be approached from different angles: someone is looking for a mentor, others attend educational courses or watch educational videos on YouTube, while others delve into information garbage, trying to find crumbs of valuable information. But if you approach this issue in a non-systematic way, then you will have to spend most of your time searching for something really important and interesting, and not studying it.

But I know a way to bring order to this chaos. And, since my area of interest is IT, I propose to discuss a systematic approach to learning and personal development in this area. This article reflects only my opinion and does not claim to be true. The ideas reflected in it exist only in the context of the article itself. And I will try to make them as short as possible.

All interested please under cat!

Step 1 (Prologue): Decide what you want

The first thing to start with is understanding the goal. Not staging, but awareness.

"The Man of Haste"

Surely many of you have come up with some idea that requires immediate action, and you were eager to implement it right now. We set goals and objectives, decomposed, distributed efforts and worked towards the result. But having approached the final milestone, when almost all tasks have been solved, and the result is not far off, you looked back and saw ... you saw the sea of killed time, a lot of other more important and significant tasks waiting aside. We saw the hard work.

At that moment, the realization came - is this idea really so important that I spent so many resources on its implementation? The answer is anyone. And the question does not always arise. This is one of the cognitive errors of your consciousness. Do not do it this way.

"A man not of his word"

Another "brilliant" idea came to your mind. You are determined to make it happen. You are already mentally drawing a plan of how it will change the world, how it will make your or someone else's life easier/brighter. Perhaps you will even become famous, and you will be revered ...

It happens. Rarely. Almost never. And ideas of such a week can be typed from a dozen. And meanwhile, you only speak, write down and idealize. Time passes, but the work does not go. Ideas are forgotten, records are lost, new ideas come in, and this endless cycle of internal bluster and self-delusion feeds your illusions of a wonderful life that you cannot achieve with this approach.

"A Man of Mindless Amount"

Here you are an organized person. Suppose IT specialist. You set tasks for yourself, work through them, bring them to the end. You keep statistics of completed tasks, draw graphs and follow an uptrend. You think in terms of numbers...

Of course, digging into the numbers and being proud of their growth is cool and nice. But what about quality and necessity? Such questions are decent"mindless peopleβ€œThey don’t ask themselves. So they forgot to multiply and add again, because the supremum of the labor function is still so far away!

"Normal person

What unites all those types of people that are described above? Here you can think and find many such coincidences, but there is one essential thing - each person from the presented types sets goals for himself, without properly realizing and not analyzing them.

In the context of one's own development, setting a goal should not be primary, it should follow the realization of the goal.

  • "A man of haste"First of all, it would be necessary to estimate how much effort will be required to implement the idea. How long will it take? And in general, is it worth it?
  • "A man out of his word"I would advise you to start small - finish with at least one "brilliant" idea. Bring it to mind, polish it (which is not necessary) and put it into the world. And in order to do this, one way or another, you need to realize what goal it will carry idea.
  • "A man of mindless quantity"you need to start monitoring the quality. There must be a balance, at least a shaky one. After all, what can a graph with only one curve, even ascending, but without any inscriptions on it, tell us? Perhaps this is a graph of increasing failures. And you can evaluate the quality of work only realizing its purpose.

Turns out to be"normal"a person, you need to understand what goals and why you set yourself. Well, after that, you can already begin to set tasks to achieve this goal.

Step 2 (tie): Find your way

Approaching the realization of the goal of our development, we must understand which way we will go to achieve it. In the IT industry, there are many ways to develop your skills. You can:

  • Read articles on HabrΓ©
  • Read more... Blogs authoritative (for you or the community) people
  • Watch themed videos on YouTube
  • Listen Lectures ΠΈ podcasts
  • visit various measures
  • Participate in hackathons And other competitions
  • Get together with colleagues and discuss topics that interest you
  • Find yourself mentor and draw knowledge from it
  • ΠŸΡ€ΠΎΠΉΡ‚ΠΈ online or offline courses
  • Learn everything in practice implementing projects
  • walk on interviews
  • Write themed Articles
  • Yes, and do a lot of other things that I did not remember.

In all this diversity, it is important to decide what is right for you. You can combine several methods, you can choose one, but I recommend thinking about each.

Step 3 (development): Learn to learn and extract only what you need

Having determined our path of development, we cannot say that all problems have been solved, it remains only to absorb the acquired knowledge. At a minimum, there will be "information noise", useless or of little use knowledge that only takes time, but does not give meaningful results. It is necessary to be able to weed out this information and ruthlessly throw it out of your plan. Otherwise, your studies may turn into boring lectures at 8 in the morning on an uninteresting subject.

You must always learn, including learning how to learn. This is a continuous process. If someone tells you that he is already a self-taught guru, feel free to express doubt (in any decent form), because he is mistaken!

Step 4 (Climax): Build the System in Disarray

So, you have realized the goal of your development, have chosen the path by which you will go to it, and have learned to weed out the useless. But how to organize the system so as not to get lost in knowledge? There are many ways to organize such a system. I can only offer a possible part of it, briefly, for example.

  • You can start your morning by reading a news feed (Habr, thematic groups in Telegram, sometimes short videos in YouTube). If there are new videos that you would like to watch since the last day, add them to the list "Watch Laterto return to them later.
  • During the day, whenever possible (and when it doesn't get in the way of your main activities), put podcast or video episodes in the background. YouTube from the list "Watch Later", while immediately deleting those releases that do not carry a payload (you can find out these from the announcement of the release and the first few minutes). This way you will rake the Augean stables.
  • In the evening, returning from work, I would recommend spending time reading a book, reading articles or listening to podcasts. The same can be done in the morning, getting to the workplace.
  • When events are held in the place where you live (conferences, meetups, etc.), if you are interested in them, try to attend them in order to gain new knowledge, communicate with colleagues, exchange experience and knowledge, and, perhaps, be inspired by what any idea.
  • On weekends, in your free time, analyze the information that has accumulated over the week. Set goals (realizing them), prioritize and get rid of "information garbage". Take the time to plan. Living in chaos will take more from you.

There are many other things that can happen during the day. Here I touch only on what is directly related to the system of self-development. Take my recommendations as the basis of your system if you like. The main thing is that it brings results and be harmonious.

Step 5 (Decoupling): Make sure everything doesn't fall apart

The system has been built. She seems to be working. But we remember that our system was built in disorder, in information chaos, which means that there is entropy and it is passively growing. At this stage, it is important to gradually reduce it so that our system can function with only a little wear and tear. Again, everyone should choose a way to reduce chaos for themselves. The author of a favorite blog may stop writing articles, YouTube- the channel or podcast may be closed, so you need to ensure that only those resources that you are interested in and that are still alive remain in your system.

Step 6 (Epilogue): Reach Nirvana

When the system is built and debugged, knowledge flows in a harmonious stream, filling the head with new ideas, it's time to reflect the product of your system into the physical world. You can start your own blog Telegram- or YouTube- a channel to share the knowledge gained. This way you will reinforce them and benefit other seekers of knowledge just like you.

Speak at conferences and meetups, write your own podcasts, hold meetings with colleagues, become a mentor for others and implement your ideas based on the knowledge gained. Only in this way will you "reach nirvana" in self-development!

Conclusion

I have been in all forms of man: I was "a man of haste","a man not of his word","a mindless man"and even approached"normal"human. Now I've come to Step 6, and hopefully soon I'll be able to tell myself that all the effort I've put into building my own development system in the chaos of IT has paid off.

Please share in the comments your thoughts on building such a system, and what type of people you consider yourself to be.

To everyone who has reached the end, I express my gratitude, and wish to "reach nirvana" with a minimum of temporary and other related losses.

Good luck!

UPD. To improve understanding of the conditional types of people, I slightly changed their name:

  • "Man of action" -> "Man of hasty business"
  • "Man of his word" -> "Man of not his word"
  • "Man of Quantity" -> "Man of Mindless Quantity"
