The release of UbuntuDDE 21.10 (Remix) has been prepared, based on the Ubuntu 21.10 codebase and delivered with the DDE (Deepin Desktop Environment). The project is an unofficial edition of Ubuntu, but the developers are making efforts to include UbuntuDDE among the official editions of Ubuntu. The size of the ISO image is 3 GB.
UbuntuDDE features the Deepin Desktop 5.5 release and a set of specialized applications developed by the Deepin Linux project, including the Deepin File Manager, DMusic audio player, DMovie video player, and DTalk messaging system. Unlike Deepin Linux, it features a redesigned appearance and replaces the Deepin app store with the Ubuntu Software Center, supporting Snap and DEB package formats. Kwin, developed by the KDE project, is used as the window manager.
Changes in the new version include a transition to the Ubuntu 21.10 package base with Linux kernel 5.13, updates to the Deepin Desktop Environment and related packages, the delivery of the alternative application directory DDE Store 1.2.3, updates to Firefox 95.0.1 and LibreOffice 7.2.3.2. The Calamares installer is used for installation.
It should be noted that the components of the Deepin desktop are developed using C/C++ (Qt5) and Go. A key feature is the taskbar, which supports multiple operating modes. In classic mode, there is a clearer separation between open windows and suggested applications to launch, displaying the system tray area. The efficient mode somewhat resembles Unity, mixing indicators of running programs, favorite applications, and controls (volume/brightness settings, connected storage devices, clock, network status, etc.). The application launcher interface is displayed full-screen and provides two modes—viewing favorite applications and navigating through the catalog of installed programs.
