Exactly 50 years ago — on April 7, 1969 — the first Request for Comments was published. An RFC is a document that contains technical specifications and standards widely used across the global network. Each RFC document has its own unique number, which is used for referencing. Currently, the primary publication of RFC documents is managed by the IETF under the auspices of the open organization Internet Society (ISOC). The Internet Society holds the rights to RFC.
The RFC-1 document was written by Steve Crocker (in the photo). At that time, he was a graduate student at Caltech. He was the one who came up with the idea of publishing technical documents in RFC format. He also participated in the creation of the ARPA "Network Working Group," which later led to the establishment of the IETF. Since 2002, he has worked at ICANN, and from 2011 to 2017, he led this organization.
