Adobe software clones, CAD, AI accelerator, and email client generated through AI

The ArtCraft project has released clones of seven popular Adobe applications — Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, Acrobat Pro, After Effects, and InDesign, recreated in Rust using AI tools. It is stated that currently, more than half of the features are implemented in most applications, with 80% functionality available for certain programs. They plan to achieve parity in functionality within a month. The project code is developed under the Apache 2.0 license — Photocraft (Photoshop), Vectorcraft (Illustrator), Filmcraft (Premiere), Lightcraft (Lightroom), Printcraft (Acrobat Pro), Effectcraft (After Effects), Designcraft (InDesign). Builds are created for Linux (AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm), macOS, Windows, and for use via Web. More than 70 participants have joined the development of the Photoshop clone, and the project has received about 20,000 stars on GitHub.

Photocraft (Adobe Photoshop) — only basic features are present, for instance, 60 out of 133 settings are placeholders, 3 tools are fully implemented, and 14 are partially implemented (13 are not implemented).

Vectorcraft (Adobe Illustrator) — it is stated that 69-75% of Illustrator's capabilities are available (40-55% of surveyed users could not identify differences). Drawing tools, contour manipulation, shape creation, filling, and text handling tools are close to readiness. Formats supported include SVG, PDF, PDF/X, EPS, DXF, EMF/WMF, PSD, and PDF-compatible .ai files. There is no support for 3D, materials, raster effects, or scripting.

Filmcraft (Adobe Premiere) — it claims to implement 87% of the capabilities, with readiness for real work assessed at 50-60%. Tools for editing, cutting, color correction, effects, titles, audio, exporting, and working with keyframes are functional. Only export in H.264 format is supported. Plugin support is absent, and there are performance issues.

Lightcraft (Adobe Lightroom) — 79% of the capabilities are claimed (readiness level — 60-70%). Support for working with JPEG/DNG and raw images for most Nikon and Sony cameras, as well as older Canon cameras, is available. Currently, there are no color calibration features, smart noise suppression modes, mask placement, video work, HDR support, and no support for Fujifilm and Olympus cameras.

Printcraft (Adobe Acrobat Pro) — about half of the features have been implemented. Document viewing, searching, merging and splitting, commenting, form creation, password protection, editing to remove confidential data, metadata cleaning, digital signatures, and printing are operational.

Effectcraft (Adobe After Effects) — in the early development stage, but nearly all tools from After Effects have already been added in some form, including all effects; however, operational accuracy is not guaranteed at this point. Plugins and projects in aep and aepx formats are not supported.

Designcraft (Adobe InDesign) — around half of the functions have been implemented.

Additionally, several projects primarily developed using AI tools have been released in the last few days:

  • CAD software Open CAD Studio for 2D drawing and 3D modeling, using GPU acceleration for rendering and supporting DWG and DXF formats. Features include tools for 2D design (lines, curves, splines, hatching, object binding, tracking modes, layer management), documentation preparation and annotation, 3D modeling (basic primitives, extrusion and rotation operations, section handling), plugin support, and scripting. The code is written in Rust and distributed under the GPLv3 license. Builds are published for Linux (snap, appimage), macOS, Windows, and for web use.
  • Penguin Mail, an email client and calendar planner written in Rust, utilizing GTK and libadwaita for interface design. Supported features include: IMAP, POP3, CardDAV, OpenPGP, S/MIME, filters, email processing rules, synchronized address book, templates, search, support for HTML and Markdown, WYSIWYG editor, labels and colored flags, automatic replies, calendar synchronization, shared and separate mailboxes for different accounts, folder separation based on labels in email (label+address@example.org), adaptive message threading, image display only on click, delayed sending mode, reply tracking and reminder functions. Integration with Gmail, Google Calendar, Outlook.com, Microsoft 365, and other services is provided. The code is available under the GPLv3 license. Builds are created for Linux (deb, rpm, snap).
  • openTPU — an open chip designed to accelerate AI model execution, developed using AI tools. FPGA implementation is available. It supports running 10 popular AI models, including LFM2, Gemma 4, Qwen3.5, SmolLM3-3B, and Phi-4-mini. Schematics, descriptions of hardware blocks in Verilog, and accompanying programs are distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
