The alpha testing of the LibreOffice 7.2 office suite has begun. Ready builds for Linux, Windows, and macOS have been prepared, allowing installation alongside stable releases of LibreOffice. The release is expected on August 18 or 19.
The most notable changes:
- Initial support for GTK4 has been added;
- OpenGL rendering code has been removed in favor of using Skia/Vulkan;
- A pop-up interface for searching settings and commands in the style of MS Office has been added, displayed over the current image (heads-up display, HUD);
- A section for managing Fontwork font effects has been added to the sidebar;
- The main Notebookbar panel has been enhanced to allow scrolling elements in the style selection block;
- Performance optimization has been conducted for Calc;
- In Writer, support for hyperlinks in tables of contents and indexes has been added, improvements have been made for working with bibliographies, a new type of field 'gutter' has been implemented to add extra margins, and it is now possible to place a background image within both the visible edges of the document and within the text boundaries;
- The template collection in Impress has been updated;
- Font caching has been improved for faster text rendering;
- Import and export filters have been enhanced, and numerous issues resolved with importing and exporting WMF/EMF, SVG, DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX formats;
- Initial support for WebAssembly compilation has been added.
