Microsoft has announced the addition of AlmaLinux to the list of Linux distributions officially recommended for use in Azure cloud environments. The announcement also noted that over 60% of client systems in Azure are utilizing Linux in their environments (the 50% threshold was crossed in 2018). In addition to AlmaLinux, the list of approved distributions includes Ubuntu, Debian, Flatcar Container Linux, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE.
Inclusion on the list implies that the distribution meets Microsoft's criteria regarding testing, delivery of updates, and provision of support. The list is also formed considering the demand for the distribution from Azure clients. The provider responsible for supporting builds for Azure enters into an agreement with Microsoft, outlining the requirements for updates and problem resolution, as well as indicating a willingness to adapt the product to new features and changes in Azure.
