Developers of ALT Linux have introduced Tuner, a new configurator for GNOME aimed at simplifying the extension of functionality and providing additional settings. It is expected that Tuner can be used by distributions shipping GNOME to create configurators that manage settings specific to the distribution. For instance, ALT Linux has implemented the TunerPanel plugin, allowing users to switch between panel (GNOME 2 style) and standard interface modes of GNOME.
The program features a plugin-based architecture, enabling the addition of new settings sections, interface modifications, and extended functionality through the delivery of individual plugins without altering the core application code. The libpeas engine, already utilized in GNOME applications Gedit and Totem, is employed for plugin creation.
Among Tuner's features is the simplification of integration with GSettings. Similar to the GNOME Refine application, Tuner provides a mechanism for creating widgets using the Blueprint interface building language. Such widgets allow linking individual GSettings configurations to interface elements designed for their modification.
The project's code is written in Vala and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. The user interface is built using the libadwaita library, conforms to GNOME HIG (Human Interface Guidelines), and can adapt responsively to screen sizes. Templates for developing standard plugins in Vala and Python are available.
