The new standard is seen not only as a continuation of the AV1 codec development but also as a foundation for the future AOMedia technology stack. The development of AV2 has been underway for several years, with the first preliminary implementation proposed two years ago as part of the libavif 1.0 library release.
Like AV1, the new video encoding format does not require royalty payments and is based on the technologies, patents, and intellectual property of the AOMedia alliance members, who provide users with a royalty-free license for the use of their patents. AOMedia includes companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, Mozilla, Facebook, Amazon, Intel, IBM, AMD, ARM, Samsung, Adobe, Broadcom, Realtek, Vimeo, Cisco, NVIDIA, Netflix, and Hulu. The patent licensing model used by AOMedia is reminiscent of the approach taken by the W3C organization in creating royalty-free web technologies.
Key features of AV2 include optimization for streaming applications, significant improvements in compression operation performance compared to AV1, expanded support for virtual and augmented reality capabilities, and support for a wider range of visual quality. It also features tools for the simultaneous delivery of multiple videos within a single video stream, allowing for their separate display on the screen.
