Other Reddit users who faced a similar issue joined the discussion on this topic. Ultimately, they concluded that the cause of the untimely notifications about incoming emails in Gmail may be the Doze feature, which first appeared in Android Marshmallow and is aimed at conserving battery life.
It cannot be said with full certainty, but it seems that the Doze feature is preventing Android from sending instant push notifications for the Gmail service unless another event occurs in the system. For example, the user who first noticed the issue claims that Gmail notifications only arrive after the smartphone is unlocked.
