A new version has been released Ardour — a free digital audio workstation.
Key innovations:
- you can now change the position of tracks in the project by simply dragging them with the mouse;
- the number of rulers has been reduced: there is now only one ruler for all types of ranges (range, loop range, punch range) and only one ruler for all types of locations (location marker, arrangement, cue, cd track marker);
- added recording and display of MIDI scene markers, which is mainly relevant for equipment that can send such events (e.g., Allen & Heath SQ digital mixers);
- parallel disk I/O has been implemented;
- extended support for the recently released Novation Launchpad mk4 MIDI keyboards has been added;
- a MIDI map for Akai MPK mini mk3 has been added, and the MIDI map for Arturia MiniLab 3 has been improved;
- a number of bugs have been fixed.
Work continues on version 9.0, which is expected to include a built-in MIDI clip editor in Cue, area effects, and other innovations.
Last year, Harrison, which develops a commercial fork of Ardour called Mixbus, became part of Solid State Logic, which also owns another mixer manufacturer, Allen & Heath. As a result, Ardour had a new commercial fork released in August, LiveTrax. This is a digital front-of-house mixer designed for live performances, with built-in support for A&H devices, a significantly simplified interface, the ability to display mixer channels on the same screen as tracks, and no plugin support. The name plays on another (now-defunct) commercial fork of Ardour — Tracks Live by Waves, with an interface styled similarly. The primary work on the fork was carried out by the Ardour authors at the request of SSL.
