The developers of the Ardour audio editor have removed support for the GTK2 library from the codebase, leaving only the option to use YTK. YTK is a fork of GTK2 created by the Ardour project in February 2024. The reason for discontinuing the GTK2 build is the addition of features in YTK that support touch input devices and rendering capabilities on macOS.
Initially, YTK was merely a copy of GTK2, integrated into the Ardour repository for easier maintenance. Changes to the codebase were limited to bug fixes and a cleanup of features not used in Ardour. YTK was used only as an option for building Ardour in distributions that had discontinued support for GTK2, while the GTK2 build continued to run by default.
In February, additional functionality absent in GTK2 began being added to YTK, and the build scripts in the experimental branch of Ardour, on which Ardour 9.0 is based, were switched to YTK by default. A few days ago, support for GTK2 was removed. Like GTK2, the YTK library only supports operation using the X11 protocol and requires XWayland to function in environments based on the Wayland protocol.
