The Tor Project has announced the release of a new version of its client Arti 1.4.0, developed in Rust. This release includes many new features and improvements aimed at enhancing performance and usability.
One of the key innovations is the new RPC interface, which replaces the control port in the C Tor implementation. The main advantages of the new interface are:
- a JSON-based protocol reducing the need for custom parsers and encoders.
- capability-based design prevents unintended interference from applications in using Arti.
- clear specifications for handling unexpected messages, parameters, and data.
- a detection mechanism simplifies the configuration of applications to use the RPC port.
- support for multiple requests allows multiple requests to be carried out simultaneously on a single connection.
Additionally, the new version has laid the groundwork for relay support and improved resilience against denial-of-service attacks on service side.
The Arti project website has also received a significant update. It now features general information about the project, code samples, documentation, and much more. Special thanks to the DocumentWrite team for their help in developing and implementing the new website design.
The release of Arti 1.4.0 is dedicated to the memory of Jérémy Bobbio (1982-2024), known in the community as Lunar. Lunar was a Tor volunteer, free software hacker, and community organizer. He made significant contributions to Debian and the Reproducible Builds project.
