The developers of the Artix Linux distribution have announced the discontinuation of support for XLibre and the return to using X.Org Server, starting with the release of Artix 2026.08. XLibre packages will no longer be distributed and will be replaced with X.Org Server packages on already installed systems. Artix was one of the first projects to fully transition to XLibre. The distribution is based on the Arch Linux package base and is notable for using openrc, runit, dinit, and s6 system managers instead of systemd, giving users a choice.
The reason for abandoning the use of XLibre is cited as the excessive number of problem reports posted by users on the forum. Such posts led to a negative reaction from the XLibre project and harassment of one of the Artix developers involved in implementing and supporting XLibre in the distribution. After the attacks, the developer left the project and ceased maintaining the XLibre packages.
