The new version of the Astra Linux OS is based on the package base of Debian 12 (Bookworm) — a modern stable open distribution with long-term support. The structure of the Astra Linux repositories has been updated. They are now divided into two repositories — Main and Extended. Main includes components that have passed the full certification cycle, while Extended contains development tools and packages for building the Main repository, as well as additional application and system packages.
Live CD mode is supported, which allows users to familiarize themselves with and evaluate the new OS before installation. The process of upgrading from Astra Linux 1.7 to version 1.8 is now automated. The user's home folder is preserved, and if an upgrade error occurs, the process can be 'rolled back' to the previous version.
Astra Linux 1.8 uses the latest 6.x versions of the Linux Kernel. Instead of one kernel version, users will have access to two branches — based on the Linux 6.1 kernel (with long-term support), refined considering the results of research from the ISP RAN Technology Center, which will be updated throughout the OS lifecycle, as well as based on the latest (latest) 6.6 version.
Astra Linux 1.8 offers ready-made recommended profiles for configuring information security tools (SZI) for various usage scenarios. This innovation will facilitate the work of IT security specialists responsible for systems whose security is regulated by information security requirements (ISPDn, GIS, ASU TP, security of critical information infrastructure, and others). Previously, specialists from the 'Astra Group' had already developed detailed recommendations in the form of instructions for configuring the OS according to different classes of system security, but implementing these settings required manual work by the security administrator. In version 1.8, a further step has been made — these instructions are presented as SZI profiles. Now it is enough to activate the necessary profile, and the required settings will align with the recommendations.
Additionally, to implement a limitation on the software environment (dynamic control of software integrity), it is now possible to use the certified cryptographic protection tool, KryptoPro CSP, and digital signature verification key certificates issued by the certification center.
Astra Linux 1.8 has successfully passed a series of tests in the certification system of the FSTEC of Russia at the first, highest level of trust. An important innovation is the confirmation of compliance of the secure system Database Management System (DBMS) Astra Linux with the requirements of the FSTEC of Russia, which is especially relevant in the current conditions where data protection is of paramount importance.
The reissued certificate of Astra Linux 1.8, based on the test results, confirms its compliance with the information security requirements imposed on several types of security tools: operating systems, virtualization and containerization tools, as well as DBMS — at level 1 of protection.
The Astra Linux operating system version 1.8 features a new visual style called Astra Proxima. It is characterized by restraint, a minimalist design, easy navigation, and modern graphical solutions. In addition to aesthetic changes, Astra Proxima introduces numerous functional improvements, enhancing the convenience and efficiency of working with the operating system. Astra Proxima is applied across all components of Astra Linux 1.8, ensuring the integrity and harmony of the visual design.
Also, in the updated version of the Astra Linux OS, for the first time in the history of information technology, a sound theme called 'Star Minimalism' was created in collaboration with Roscosmos. This unique composition is made up of the 'voices' of real space objects.
