The Firefox browser on Android has been losing popularity lately. Therefore, Mozilla is developing Fenix. This is a new web browser with an improved tab management system, a faster engine, and a modern appearance. Speaking of which, it features a trendy dark theme.
The company has not yet announced an exact release date, but they have already released a public beta version. The new browser has made significant changes to the user interface compared to the mobile version of Firefox. For instance, the navigation panel has moved down, simplifying access to the menu items. However, the tab switching functionality is not yet implemented very well. Previously, you could swipe across the address bar like in Chrome, but now that gesture redirects you to the combined start screen. This might change before the release.
The beta version has already been published on Google Play, but access requires registering as a beta tester and joining the Fenix Nightly Google group. Alternatively, you can download the build from APK Mirror. However, in this case, automatic updates will not be available for obvious reasons.
It is worth noting that the release of Fenix is expected sometime after the planned release of Firefox 68 in July. However, it is still unclear how long we will have to wait for the new release. It might only happen in 2020 when version 68 stops receiving security updates. Only after the old browser loses support will all users be automatically transitioned to the new one.
