The development of the openSUSE Leap 15.4 distribution has entered the beta testing phase. The release is based on the core package set shared with the SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP 4 distribution and also includes some user applications from the openSUSE Tumbleweed repository. A universal DVD image is available for download, sized at 3.9 GB (x86_64, aarch64, ppc64les, 390x). The openSUSE Leap 15.4 release is expected on June 8, 2022. Support for the openSUSE Leap 15.3 branch will continue for 6 months after the release of 15.4.
The proposed release includes updated versions of various packages, including KDE Plasma 5.24, GNOME 41, and Enlightenment 0.25. The installation of the H.264 codec and gstreamer plugins has been simplified for users who require them. A new specialized release, 'Leap Micro 5.2', has been introduced, based on the MicroOS project.
The Leap Micro build is a stripped-down version of the distribution, formed from the Tumbleweed repository, utilizing an atomic installation system and automatic updates, supporting configuration through cloud-init, and provided with a read-only root partition using Btrfs and integrated support for runtime Podman/CRI-O and Docker. The primary purpose of Leap Micro is for use in decentralized environments, for creating microservices, and as a base system for virtualization platforms and container isolation.
