The latest weekly development report for KDE has been published, featuring the first batch of changes for the KDE Plasma 6.7 branch, which is expected to be released in June. Development of the new branch began after the KDE Plasma 6.6 branch was moved to beta testing and the related codebase was frozen from functional changes (only bug fixes are allowed). The release of KDE Plasma 6.6 is scheduled for February 17.
New features being developed for KDE Plasma 6.7:
- A global push-to-talk mode has been implemented, where the microphone is activated only while pressing and holding a specific key combination.
- Buttons for quick switching between light and dark themes have been added to the brightness and color management widgets.
- In the Discover application manager, the 'Games' section now displays separate subcategories for launchers and utilities.
- The configuration tool now shows settings pages for gaming controllers, mice, and touchpads only when those devices are present.
- Editing items on the desktop has been improved on systems with touch screens.
- When searching for the word 'memory', the System Monitor application is now suggested among the recommendations.
- Network activity tracking support has been implemented in the widgets and the System Monitor application on FreeBSD platforms.
Among the changes in the beta version of KDE Plasma 6.6:
- A new on-screen keyboard, plasma-keyboard, has been developed to replace the Maliit virtual keyboard. The plasma-keyboard is based on the code of the Qt Virtual Keyboard, which is part of Qt. The KDE implementation extends its capabilities for integration with the Plasma desktop, addresses some usability issues, and applies a new scaling algorithm that improves keyboard display on narrow screens.
- A new login manager, plasma-login-manager, has been added to replace the SDDM (Simple Desktop Display Manager) display manager, addressing architectural issues specific to it. Plasma-login-manager utilizes a backend based on a stripped-down version of SDDM and a launch mechanism identical to that used for starting the KDE Plasma desktop session. The login screen design is similar to the existing KDE screen locker, and settings are unified with KDE Plasma. Instead of using QML for customizing themes, it is recommended to use existing desktop wallpaper plugins, color schemes, and Plasma themes.
- A new initial setup wizard, plasma-setup, has been added, which complements the login welcome screen (Welcome Center). The plasma-setup offers system operations that are carried out before the first login after installation, such as creating a new user for ongoing work, selecting a language and timezone, configuring keyboard layout, and setting up network access.
- The System Monitor application has added support for setting process execution priorities, similar to how it can be done in the old KSysGuard application.
- By default, error checking in the file system is no longer performed when mounting external drives; this operation is now invoked optionally through a separate setting.
