Nine months after the formation of the last significant release, Oracle has presented the first beta release of the Virtualization System VirtualBox 6.1.
Key :
- Support has been added for the hardware mechanisms introduced in the fifth generation Intel Core i processors (Broadwell) for nested virtualization of virtual machines;
- The old method for supporting 3D graphics based on the VBoxVGA driver has been removed. For 3D, it is recommended to use the new VBoxSVGA and VMSVGA drivers;
- A software on-screen keyboard has been added, which can be used as a keyboard in guest operating systems;
- Support for importing virtual machines from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has been introduced. The functions for exporting virtual machines to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure have been expanded, including the ability to create multiple virtual machines without rebooting them;
- An option has been added to export virtual machines to cloud environments using paravirtualization mechanisms;
- The graphical interface has improved the creation of virtual machine images (VISO) and expanded the capabilities of the built-in file manager;
- The VirtualBox Manager now better displays the list of virtual machines, with groups of virtual machines more prominently highlighted, improved VM search, and fixed the tools section position while scrolling through the VM list;
- A built-in VM attributes editor has been added to the virtual machine information panel, allowing changes to certain settings without opening the configurator;
- The media enumeration code has been optimized to run faster and with less CPU load in scenarios with a large number of registered media. The function for adding existing or new media has been restored in the Virtual Media Manager;
- Configuration of storage options for VM has been made more convenient, providing support for changing the controller bus type and the ability to move attached elements between controllers using a drag-and-drop interface;
- The session information dialog has been expanded and improved;
- The input system has been updated to support horizontal mouse scrolling using the IntelliMouse Explorer protocol;
- The vboximg-mount module has been added with experimental support for direct access to NTFS, FAT, and ext2/3/4 file systems within disk images, implemented on the guest system side and not requiring support for this file system on the host side. Operation is currently possible in read-only mode.
