Forestlight Games and publisher PlayWay announced The Pope: Power & Sin ā a simulator where players take on the role of the Pope at the twilight of the Medieval era. As they progress, they will need to expand their influence, accumulate wealth, and address the public, among other tasks.
The trailer accompanying the announcement shows how a player kills the Pope and assumes the position. Then, viewers get a glimpse of the perks of being the head of the Catholic Church. A bedroom with three naked women briefly appears on screen, followed by the protagonist addressing the faithful. The developers invite players to 'feel the power of God' and engage in other, more pressing matters. The Pope must expand his influence over surrounding territories, gather intelligence on important figures and political leaders through espionage, and eliminate undesirable priests by instructing a trusted guard to poison their wine.
The Pope is also obligated to forge beneficial alliances to consolidate his power. He can use diplomatic leverageāmarriages, bribery, peace offerings, and declarations of war. The last of the showcased abilities involves the execution of heretics. The process is not shown to viewers, but a blood-soaked scaffold is visible in the trailer.
The developers stated that The Pope: Power & Sin is inspired by the life of Rodrigo Borgia, who took the name Alexander VI and was Pope from 1492 to 1503. His papacy is associated with a general decline of the Catholic Church.
