In honor of the 50th anniversary of Microsoft, founded on April 4, 1975, Bill Gates has released the source code of the Altair BASIC interpreter. Altair BASIC was launched for the MITS Altair 8800 microcomputer and became Microsoft’s first product. The interpreter occupies less than 4 KB and can run on systems with 4 KB of RAM. Bill Gates and Paul Allen did not have the opportunity to purchase an Altair 8080 computer, so they used a homemade emulator for the Intel 8800 processor, which ran on a PDP-10 system they had access to, during the development and testing. The code is available for download as a PDF file (100 MB) containing scans of printed assembly code.
