The Brave Browser, which is a Chromium-based product, was caught by users injecting referral links when visiting certain websites. For instance, a referral code is added to the link when navigating to "binance.us," turning the original link into "binance.us/en?ref=35089877."
Similarly, the browser behaves this way when visiting other cryptocurrency-related sites. According to available data, the referral link is injected when accessing resources like Coinbase, Trezor, and Ledger. This feature is enabled by default for all Brave users. It can be disabled by going to the relevant menu at brave://settings/appearance.
The Brave developers do not hide the fact that the company earns through various affiliate programs. However, such a practice of automatically injecting referral links may negatively affect the browser's reputation, as users are not informed about this.
Brave co-founder Brendan Eich commented on this issue on his Twitter account, stating that the browser should not inject any additions when a user visits a specified URL. "Sorry for this mistake — we are clearly not perfect, but we will correct our course quickly," Mr. Eich said.
According to available information, the developers have already found a solution to the referral link injection issue. The feature responsible for link insertion has been disabled by default, whereas previously it was enabled for all Brave users.
